     Over the eons, nature has extracted billions of tonnes of carbon compounds from the surface and buried them in extensive beds of limestone, dolomite, magnesite, dead corals, sea shells, animal skeletons, methane hydrate and hydro-carbons. Luckily, burning coal, oil, gas, peat and wood and making cement and fertiliser is restoring some of this valuable plant food to the surface and atmosphere where plants can again extract it and thrive. This is called the Carbon Cycle. Wasting heaps of money and scads of energy trying to separate, compress and rebury this benign valuable plant food in pressurized carbon sequestration cemeteries is green lunacy. If this compressed gas escapes in a rush, it will be deadly for nearby animal life. Naturally thermal coal producers love “carbon sequestration” – it will greatly increase the consumption of coal energy for separation, compression, pumping and burial.

     The Saltbush Club today called for an enquiry into a last minute intervention by an American politician, Al Gore, into the Australian Election. The Executive Director of the Saltbush Club, Viv Forbes, said that in such a tight election race, the intervention of someone with the international stature of Al Gore, assisted by the climate activist Australian Broadcasting Commission, could easily change the result of the election.

To avoid such a disaster we must revert to the wonderful facility offered by the old Commonwealth Bank of Australia.  I mean before it split into our Reserve Bank and the Commonwealth Trading Bank.  It provided finance for World War 1 at minimal rates of interest.  It also provided long term, low interest loans to farmers; money for oil refining; coastal shipping and many other necessities.  This must be re-activated so we do not borrow from foreign sources.  Foreign borrowing was not necessary in the WW1 days and it is not needed now.  Australia is resource rich and can finance its own development.

     When the majority of diverse Australia voted for the same sex marriage proposal, I found myself totally disillusioned and unable to write for some weeks, due to a depression-related collapse. It was truly terrible, for I lost faith, what little I had left, in my fellow Australians. If North Korea had nuked us, I would not have cared, assuming that I was alive to know.      I am just a simple man, and perhaps writing about economic issues that affect our very existence should be left to the experts. But, wait, isn’t that centralism too, and if that is bad in politics, then why not knowledge? Do we ordinary people have a right to a say, or is the ground solely to be covered by experts, even if it is from our side? Most politicians live in a green fantasy-land where facts and numbers don’t count.

They dream up fanciful figures for proposed cuts to industrial and agricultural emissions without any understanding of the remorseless growth of population.

The Australian government has set a target to reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 27% from 2005 levels by 2030, just 11 years away. The ALP opposition plans to cut emissions by a staggering 45% by 2030.

Australia’s population is growing at 1.7% per year (higher than most other developed countries). At this growth rate, population will increase by about 50% from 2005 levels by 2030.

If we did NOTHING about cutting emissions, and the economy stood still, the continuing rise in population will ensure that emissions (and economic activity) per head of population will fall by 30% from 2005 levels by 2030.

Who among us is volunteering to use 30% less food, petrol, gas and electricity than we used in 2005 solely because of population growth? Who is promising to abolish the baby bonus and cut our intake of migrants, refugees, tourists and foreign students by 30%?

And of those prepared to make these sacrifices, who is volunteering to meet even the modest government cuts proposed for 2030 which will require us to use 50% less food, petrol, gas and electricity per capita than we used in 2005? The Green/ALP cuts would take us back to the middle ages.

We have just three choices – reduce population growth; abolish emissions targets; or welcome creeping poverty.

There is a fourth choice – eject all climate fools from the political stables in Canberra.

Their proposed emissions targets will harm the natural environment by splattering the land with subsidised wind and solar monstrosities. They will also divert land from producing food to producing ethanol fuel for cars, and they will force poor people into poverty with soaring electricity prices.

But they will have no measurable effect on climate.

To The Australian        Graham Richardson states that he would "never allow Holocaust-deniers to peddle their nonsense" ("Decorum in forum aids free speech", 13/5). He believes in limited speech, not free speech. He also says that he will vote Labor until the day he dies. Yes, the two things go together. Anyone voting Greens-Labor in the coming elections either (like Richardson) undervalues the fundamental importance of genuine free speech to our traditional Australian way of life or is ignorant of the issues involved. Once you allow the principle of intellectual freedom to be a little eroded, you open the door to further erosions and before you know it you live under tyranny. Perhaps Richardson could explain why "nonsense" needs to be stopped by legal sanctions. It's overkill, surely!

To The Age        It is good news for the principle of genuine representative government that Nigel Farage's Brexit Party is doing so well in the UK ("Farage tops Tories in British poll", 13/5). First the Conservative Party and then a majority of MPs in the House of Commons have defied the popular wish for Britain to leave the dictatorial European Union, a wish shown clearly in the 2016 referendum verdict. The British people would be fools to take this dishonourable behaviour lying down. Let us hope that Farage is right that "millions of Britons will desert the two main parties" if PM Theresa May and Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn "reach a consensus", because any such agreement would be a betrayal of the majority will and an affront to democracy. It would be a Brexit in name only.
