“Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth refused to deputize citizens to prevent rioting and mayhem in the city, while police also ordered armed business owners to stop defending their own property. Three people were shot, two fatally, during a second night of chaos in Kenosha that also saw numerous buildings set on fire and properties trashed. The unrest is a reaction to the police shooting of wanted felon Jacob Blake, who fought with police, may have been carrying a knife and was also seen reaching into his vehicle before cops opened fire. With many armed citizens vowing to defend their safety and property from increasingly violent Black Lives Matter agitators, it appears they are not getting much support from authorities. The Journal-Sentinel also reported how “a group of armed men with long guns” were observed “standing guard at a dry cleaning business on Sheridan Road near 59th Street, some on the roof.” “Police told them to get off the roof and a person shouted back: “Officer, this is our business.” Police did not ultimately order them off the roof.      Some jurisdictions have a good Samaritan law, where you must help someone in need. I think the last episode of Seinfeld dealt with this, where the crew ended up in prison for allowing someone to suffer while they watched. Generally good Samaritan laws protect people who do help from liability, rather than give a positive duty to help. Finland and Germany are exceptions:

It did so by both declaring a state of emergency and a state of disaster, thus imposing draconian lock down measures after a surge in coronavirus infections.      Here is some background material on the US situation on whether of not mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations would be constitutional. The answer is, probably not, given the extensive protection of liberties in the US constitution. But, the situation is different for Australia, which has a constitution mainly serving as an enabling document, to get the Federation up, and commerce flowing. Liberties were supposed to be protected by the common law, and parliament. The idea that the parliament and the courts could become corrupted, did not occur to the constitutional framers, and one cannot be too hard on them, since what has happened is the equivalent of say an invasion form space by real aliens, happening today. It just was not in their paradigm. Thus, we have the Melbourne situation, and it could get worse. One shudders to think what the state would do if there as a real danger, like a 1918 flu, with bodies on the street. There is a fundamental jurisprudential problem here, as the present system does not protect freedoms in cases where the elites go for broke and set out to enslave us. Perhaps, given the US situation, no set of laws and rules could do this, because all these systems require fair and just operators, and when that goes, there is only the chaos which is dawning now.      Readers have asked about where the power of the Victorian government comes from for the Covid-19 restrictions, some of the toughest in the world. Both Australia and New Zealand’s governments have wantonly restricted civil liberties with some of the most stringent lockdown conditions on the planet. Each country seems to be trying to one up the other in the authoritarian stakes at every turn. First the Australian state of Victoria declared a “state of disaster” and instituted an astonishingly draconian lockdown that mandated, among other things, masks outdoors everywhere at all times and granted the police the power to enter homes without a warrant. Apparently not wanting to be out done by the Victorians across the Tasman Sea, Kiwi PM Jacinda Arderndecided that they couldn’t possibly hold an election while there were less than 80 active cases of Covid-19 in the country, and so delayed it for a month. Admirable commitment to democracy there. But plainly the police in Victoria got wind that the New Zealanders had upped the ante so decided that what they needed to do was start using drones to spy on civilians. Melbourne coppers will be putting eyes in the skyto make sure none of the inmates, sorry citizens, are out and about doing things that they shouldn’t. Apparently, police in the city have decided they need to resort to tactics usually employed by the US Army to track down jihadis in the mountains of Afghanistan to catch people simply leaving their homes. Among the crimes these drones will be dispatched to try and catch people committing are such heinous offenses as going to the beach, not wearing masks, visiting playgrounds or using skate parks. The drones can be flown up to a distance of 7km and have the ability to read vehicle number plates from a distance of 500 meters. Interestingly, this means that the drones will technically and legally be allowed to go further from home than Melburnians, who are under a strict night curfew and can only go up to 5km from their homes between the hours of 5am and 8pm, except for work and medical care.  Otherwise they will be in breach of the curfew imposed by Victorian Premier Dan Andrews – newly nicknamed Kim Jong Dan – and can be fined nearly AU$5,000 (US$3,621). Repeat offenders face a fine of up to AU$20,000. The drones will also be used to make sure people aren’t crossing the border into neighboring states, as that is yet another freedom Dan has seen fit to deprive his people of. He’s also deployed 2,000 military personnel to help to enforce virus-control measures. As one exasperated Aussie put it on Twitter: “Are we in Melbourne or China?”

“The gentrified New York City that made the Big Apple the envy of billionaires, oligarchs, child molesters and money laundering criminals from around the world is no more, and in its place is the hellish New York from the 1970s. According to Gothamist, between Thursday and Saturday, 49 people were shot in the largest city in the United States, as the uptick in gun violence continues this summer and is rushing to catch up with that other progressive paradise, Chicago. Putting the surge in context, the number of people shot over the three days is five times more than the eight who were shot during the same days last year according to the Washington Examiner. While most of the shooting victims were merely wounded, at least six people were killed by gunshot wounds over the 3-day interval, compared to three homicides that took place during the same time last year. Year to date, there have been 1,087 shooting victims so far in 888 different incidents throughout the city, roughly double the crime observed in 2019. Last year at this time, there had been 577 shooting victims in 488 incidents in New York City. Among those murdered was an off-duty corrections officer who worked at Rikers Island. John Jeff, 28, had just left a party in Queens at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning when he was shot in the head and chest. "Early this morning, the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association was notified that New York City Correction Officer John Jeff, assigned to the Anna M. Kross Center on Rikers Island, was found dead in South Jamaica Queens. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was 28 years old and was on the job for just over two years with his whole life and career ahead of him. He was well-liked and highly regarded by his fellow officers,” Correction Officers Benevolent Association President Benny Boscio Jr. said in a statement. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots outside their homes, and sources told ABC 7 the killing appeared to be planned.
