To The Age          Catherine McGregor asks for the impossible ("PM must push Indigenous treaty", 10/8). She wants "a treaty, a makarrata" between Australians identifying as Aboriginal and the rest of us, which will not "undermine the sovereignty of the Australian nation" when that is exactly what such acts would do. She seems unable to accept that the "original custodians" are no longer with us, only those descended from them (in part or wholly). Today's Aboriginals must be seen as firstly Australians, having no more rights and privileges than any other Australians. Thus no "constitutional recognition" would be appropriate or just. As for Aboriginal culture, it is already widely recognised and honoured, along with the story of British pioneering and settlement. There is, in 2018, no fiction in Australia's self-presentation as a successful nation in which citizens generally and in most contexts have a "fair go".

To The Australian          Stephen Fitzpatrick refers to "the flowering movement for indigenous constitutional recognition" ("Speed bumps on the road to reconciliation", 11-12/8), but my belief is that it is shrivelling. As the advocates of such recognition writhe and twist in their efforts to find a road to the power they seek, more and more ordinary Australians are becoming aware that the whole project is a scam that endangers our national unity and social security, while being grossly inequitable to other Australians (the huge majority). Petrol has been thrown on the fire by the threat (what else is it?) by academic Mick Dodson ("Dark vibes with a realistic edge") that Peter Cotton's new novel Dead Heat "may well turn out to be prophetic" with its picture of Aboriginal armed struggle (with outside help) against the rest of us. To The Age          Nicole Hemmer seems to nurse a lot of hatred for what she calls "white nationalism" ("Hate: to put up or shut up?", 13/8). She stereotypes it as hate-mongering, the purveying of odious ideas, crude anti-Semitism or racism, neo-Nazism, authoritarianism and hostility to democracy. A number of truths seem to be lost in this tirade. Firstly, that it is normal and not wicked for people to prefer association with their own folk. Secondly, that there is much dangerous hostility being shown around the world to white people generally and to their Western European culture and civilization. Thirdly that, inevitably, white people are banding together in many nations to protect their integrity as a people and to defend themselves from mistreatment by other groups. Defined in that way, "white power" is not an evil, any more than "black power" or "Jewish power" are. What is important in the global village is for all the ethnic communities to balance their will-to-survive with respect for that same quality in others. Some "white nationalists" clearly go too far, but others, like Kevin McDonald, do not.

To The Australian          Brendan O'Neill asks: "How can we convince the owners of social media to permit the freest speech possible?"      Somehow, some white guy  stole a plane, then took off  to put it through its paces, then, apparently suicidal, crashed it.      The issue here is that an ordinary person recorded what appears to be a missile launch, but critics say that there are no military bases in the area, and that a submarine launch is implausible. Well, it is a surface to air missile, so that does not mean anything, for an isolated Deeper could have ordered such a hit. They killed Kennedy didn’t they and look how pro-immigration he was. Further, we do not know how Air Force One dealt with a missile attack; apparently two fighter jets follow it, so there is a fair chance the missile would have been shot down or diverted. Would Trump have the guts to talk about this, or would the attack, being part of the system, be classified? Better luck next time.
