Gordon G. Chang, leading critic of communist China, sees the present crisis in Sri Lanka, as an opening act of how China is going to act in the near future, using predatory lending, as seen in its Belt and Road Initiative. These projects produce massive debt, but have little real benefit to the countries, usually signed by corrupt leaders, as seen in Africa. In December 2017, Beijing took control of the Hambantota port, and there are now concerns that this will be developed as a Chinese naval base, to dominate the Indian ocean, and counter its enemy, India. There is a lesson here for Australia with the Port of Darwin.
