The Queen: Update By Peter West

Loyal subjects of Her Majesty the Queen will be delighted to know that the Queen will be safe during these plague days/months/years. While the wife of the Canadian prime minster of political correctness has been infected, Her Majesty is moving house:
  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8113069/Queen-quits-Buckingham-Palace-coronavirus-fears-Cobra-crisis-talks.html?ito=push-notification&ci=10277&si=1326534

“The Queen has quit Buckingham Palace over coronavirus fears after Corbra crisis talks, it has been reported. Her Majesty, 93, has been taken to Windsor Castle with plans in place to quarantine her and Prince Philip, 98, at Sandringham if the outbreak worsens. The news comes as Britain's coronavirus death rate almost doubled today as ten more people died, bringing total deaths to 21. A royal source told The Sun: 'She is in good health but it was thought best to move her. A lot of her staff are a bit panicky over coronavirus. 'The Queen has met a lot of people there until recently. But she is weeks away from her 94th birthday and advisers believe it is best to get her out of harm’s way.' Her Majesty's upcoming visits to Cheshire and Camden were yesterday postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.”

Step One on the Road to Terminator By Brain Simpson

The Terminator movies were perhaps the most vivid cinematic critique of AI and the computer society, showing where it all goes, namely the machines become self-aware, and realise that humans are a treat to their existence, so they begin the process of eliminating them, which is logical enough, for the machines, anyway. The cyborgs in the movies were killing machines, designed to hunt down special humans for termination.
  https://www.technocracy.news/scientists-achieve-first-step-in-creating-cyborgs/

“Scientists have linked up two silicon-based artificial neurons with a biological one across multiple countries into a fully-functional network. Using standard internet protocols, they established a chain of communication whereby an artificial neuron controls a living, biological one, and passes on the info to another artificial one. Whoa. We’ve talked plenty about brain-computer interfaces and novel computer chips that resemble the brain. We’ve covered how those “neuromorphic” chips could link up into tremendously powerful computing entities, using engineered communication nodes called artificial synapses. As Moore’s law is dying, we even said that neuromorphic computing is one path towards the future of extremely powerful, low energy consumption artificial neural network-based computing—in hardware—that could in theory better link up with the brain. Because the chips “speak” the brain’s language, in theory they could become neuroprosthesis hubs far more advanced and “natural” than anything currently possible. This month, an international team put all of those ingredients together, turning theory into reality. The three labs, scattered across Padova, Italy, Zurich, Switzerland, and Southampton, England, collaborated to create a fully self-controlled, hybrid artificial-biological neural network that communicated using biological principles, but over the internet.

Chinese Propaganda Warfare Hots Up By James Reed

The Chinese are full-on accusing the Americans of creating the coronavirus as a bioweapon:
  https://news.trust.org/item/20200312152307-rlv7m

“A spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry suggested on Thursday the U.S. military might have brought the coronavirus to the Chinese city of Wuhan, which has been hardest hit by the outbreak, doubling down on a war of words with Washington. China has taken great offence at comments by U.S. officials accusing it of being slow to react to the virus, first detected in Wuhan late last year, and of not being transparent enough. On Wednesday, U.S. National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien said the speed of China's reaction to the emergence of the coronavirus had probably cost the world two months when it could have been preparing for the outbreak. In a strongly worded tweet, written in English on his verified Twitter account, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said it was the United States that lacked transparency. "When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!" Zhao wrote. Zhao, an avid and often combative Twitter user, did not offer any evidence for his suggestion that the U.S. military might be to blame for the outbreak in China. Earlier on Thursday, Zhao's fellow Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang criticised U.S. officials for "immoral and irresponsible" comments that blamed Beijing's response to the coronavirus for worsening the global impact of the pandemic. Asked about O'Brien's comments, Geng told a daily news briefing in Beijing on that such remarks by U.S. officials would not help U.S. epidemic efforts. China's efforts to slow the spread had bought the world time to prepare against the epidemic, he added. "We wish that a few officials in the U.S. would at this time concentrate their energy on responding to the virus and promoting cooperation, and not on shifting the blame to China."

Top of the Canadian Tree Falls to Covid-19 By Brian Simpson

This is becoming a full-time job as I work late into the night reading numerous articles from dozens of sites to keep on top of the coronavirus pandemic. This latest news item is informative, since Sophie Trudeau, wife of Canada’s PM, Justin Trudeau, has now tested positive for the coronavirus. Thus, even the elites, at least the lower level puppet types like political leaders are getting the bug. But, my guess is that George Soros and higher up, will not.

Time Restricted Eating By Mrs Vera West

The merits of fasting have been known for thousands of years by religious folk both West and East. Indeed, the feast/feast way of doing things was the main way of subsistence in the ancient past, and no doubt this is where humanity will return. But until that happy time, here is some info on the modern view of this, time restricted eating:
  https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2020/03/12/time-restricted-eating-autophagy-alzheimers.aspx?cid_source=dnl&cid_medium=email&cid_content=art1HL&cid=20200312Z1&et_cid=DM478075&et_rid=828032453

“Research overwhelmingly supports the notion that ditching the “three square meals a day” approach in favor of time-restricted eating (also referred to as intermittent fasting) can do wonders for your health, as your body simply cannot function optimally when there’s a continuous supply of calories coming in. The cycling of feasting (feeding) and famine (fasting) mimics the eating habits of our ancestors and restores your body to a more natural state that allows a whole host of biochemical benefits to occur. It’s a powerful approach that not only facilitates weight loss, but also helps reduce your risk of chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. While there are many variations, time-restricted eating typically involves not eating for at least 14 consecutive hours a day. However, not eating for 16 to 20 hours is likely closer to a metabolic ideal. This means you eat all of your meals for the day within a four- to eight-hour window. Among the many benefits of time-restricted eating is the upregulation of autophagy and mitophagy — natural cleansing processes necessary for optimal cellular renewal and function. In a January 2020 review paper,1 researchers explain how caloric restriction helps combat Alzheimer’s specifically, through these autophagy pathways.

Vitamin C, Genetics and the Coronavirus Pandemic By Brian Simpson

There is a thought-provoking article by Lance Welton at vDare.com, Welton taking the line that there are racial differences in the susceptibility to Covid-19 infection, with East Asian being at risk, Africans and White Europeans less so. In his latest piece he speculates about one hypothesis explaining this, being a genetically based proficiency in maintaining vitamin C levels in the blood:
  https://vdare.com/articles/coronavirus-and-vitamin-c-is-this-why-israel-closed-its-borders?scroll_to_paragraph=6

“This has been explored in detail by the health journalist Bill Sardi [Health Inheritance: Asians Have Lower Vitamin C Blood Levels; More Prone To Coronavirus & Other Infections, LewRockwell.com, March 7, 2020].
Maintaining healthy Vitamin C levels is extremely important. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant, crucial because oxidization results in damage to cells and, so, a reduced ability to fight off infection. It is also crucial in repairing cells and maintaining a strong immune system. Vitamin C is obtained from certain kinds of fruit (most obviously oranges) and some vegetables, such as broccoli. People who don’t get enough of it are prone to cancer, heart problems, brain degeneration and, in extreme cases, scurvy. However, maintaining Vitamin C in the blood isn’t solely a matter of diet. Genetics plays its part as well. Some people can maintain a high level of Vitamin C without eating that much fruit at all. It depends on the form of Haptoglobin which they carry: Hp 1-1, Hp 2-1, or Hp 2-2. Haptoglobin (HAPTO-G) is a protein in the blood that binds to haemoglobin, this being the red protein in blood cells that carries oxygen and iron. Haptoglobin destroys excess iron, limits the amount of (potentially damaging) unbound iron, and reduces the amount of iron lost in the kidneys. Hp 2-2 doesn’t bind as well as the other two. The result of this is excess iron in the blood. This excess iron oxidates—rusts—in response to oxygen, setting off a process that also causes the Vitamin C to oxidate. This reduces the efficacy of the Vitamin C, causing the person with this form of HAPTO-G to have a less effective immune system.

Israel and the Coronavirus By Brian Simpson

It is wise to pay close attention to the policies of the state of Israel, since this nation, above all others has excellent survival instincts, and almost always gets things right. Take their response to the coronavirus pandemic:
  https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-closes-schools-universities-as-netanyahu-issues-dire-coronavirus-warning/

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Thursday that Israel would be closing schools and universities effective Friday as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, calling the pandemic “a global event unlike anything” the country had ever seen. “We are closing the schools and the universities,” the premier announced on live television. He said the closure didn’t include preschools and kindergartens, special education and boarding schools, adding that a decision would be made for those institutions soon. In a prime-time speech from the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem, Netanyahu warned that “the potential number of deaths is very high and we must take action to prevent that.” He said the mortality rate from the virus, which he put at between two and four percent, was “very high.” There have so far been no deaths from the virus in Israel, where there have been 109 confirmed cases. “We are in the midst of a global event unlike anything else in the history of the state’s existence,” he said, offering a dire warning of the potential death toll if most of the population is infected and even comparing the situation to the 1918 Spanish Flu, which infected some 500 million people — 27% of the world’s population at the time — and killed between 17 and 50 million people, according to estimations.”

The Purge and Coronavirus By Brian Simpson

Even if the coronavirus is an escaped bioweapon, made by the Chinese, somehow blaming ordinary Chinese people for this, is just insane. They are pawns in the game of the globalists as much as we are. Well, noble sentiments, but one of the by-products of plurality is that diverse people will have diverse reactions, and in LA Asians fear that they will be targeted if things get to zombie apocalypse levels. In fact, the metaphor used in the article featured here, is  “The Purge,” a TV show actually involving hunting down people and purging them:
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Purge
  https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/gun-sales-soar-among-asian-americans-after-virus-related-attacks

“The threat of Covid-19 hate crimes across the country is surging this week as Asian Americans in San Gabriel Valley, a region east of Los Angeles, are loading up on weapons as concerns they could be targeted. CBS Los Angeles reported this week that gun sales among Asians are rising in San Gabriel Valley as they believe the pandemic could trigger hate crimes against them. David Liu, the owner of Arcadia Firearm & Safety, said gun sales have jumped in the last two weeks as the virus crisis worsens in California. "Because of coronavirus, a lot of people start to worry," Liu said. CBS Los Angeles said there's a high concentration of Asians near the Arcadia gun store. Liu said many of his customers are stocking up on weapons because they fear they might be targeted because of their ethnicity if a local virus outbreak is to occur. "I do worry," said Daniel Lim, who recently bought a gun and ammo for his wife at Arcadia. Lim said he bought the gun to defend his family amid fears the virus could crash the stock market and economy and lead to massive social unrest where Asians would be targeted. "I hope and pray it never happens," he said. Lim isn't the only Asian American in the community, thinking that a purge is coming if the virus crisis gets out of hand. "We think it's the perfect time to get a weapon for ourselves," said another Arcadia customer, Dirk Zhang, adding that his wife would never allow a gun in the house until now. "She's a little afraid of the outbreak of the virus," he said. We noted on Monday that the first possible coronavirus-related hate crime in America, where an Asian man was stabbed numerous times, all caught on camera, occurred on a Brooklyn, New York street.”

Rape Grooming Continues: Business as Usual in UK-Decay By Mrs Vera West

Many people who know about the UK, and European, child grooming rape gangs may think that this is the past, and that even though the police let it happened because of fears of being seen to be racist, that the worst is over. But, rape grooming is on an increase, and the official figures, which some will not trust at all, have almost 19,000 victims in 2018-2019:
  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7833493/Nearly-19-000-children-sexually-groomed-England-past-year.html
  https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/grooming-child-sex-abuse-exploitation-rotherham-rochdale-police-a9215261.html

“Almost 19,000 children have been sexually groomed in England in the past year, according to official figures that have prompted warnings of an “epidemic”. Campaigners say the true figure is far higher and accused the government of failing to tackle child sexual exploitation, despite promises made after high-profile cases in Rotherham and Rochdale. More than 18,700 suspected victims of child sexual exploitation were identified by local authorities in 2018-19, up from 3,300 five years before. Sarah Champion, the Labour MP for Rotherham, said the figures show that grooming “remains one of the largest forms of child abuse in the country”. “Too many times, government has said it will ‘learn lessons’, yet 19,000 children are still at risk of sexual exploitation,” she told The Independent. “The government has singularly failed to tackle this issue head on. Its approach has been piecemeal and underfunded.” Sajid Javid promised a review into the characteristics of grooming gangs in 2018, saying high-profile cases included a “high proportion of men of Pakistani heritage” and that “cultural reasons” could be at play. The Independent understands that the Home Office started internal analysis of data from police and other agencies, and will use it to inform policy development and prevention strategies. But the findings may not be published and the Queen’s Speech, which set out Boris Johnson's legislative agenda, did not include any mention of a public review.”

Mighty Melatonin By Mrs Vera West

Many of our older readers are taking melatonin hormones medications, not the stuff from the health food shop, to aid in sleep, not just to re-establish normal rhythms, and I can say that it works well. But, there are other benefits too:
  https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2019/11/18/melatonin-reduces-inflammation.aspx?utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art3HL&utm_campaign=20191118Z1&et_cid=DM393404&et_rid=752448100

“In a combined effort, scientists from universities in Brazil and Italy sought to identify the role melatonin may have in improving disorders commonly found in those who are obese. The researchers used mice who were induced to become obese and treated them for 10 weeks with melatonin. The objective was to determine if the hormone could effectively delay or block the damage from eating too much. The researchers found multiple results supporting their theory that melatonin supplementation could have a significant effect on the animals, including reducing triglyceride levels and total and LDL cholesterol levels. They also found that supplementation prevented larger weight gain by reducing the formation of fat tissue and increasing the capacity to break down white fat. This combination of effects helped to prevent the hypertrophy of fat cells caused by excessive eating. Additionally, the researchers noted the supplementation reduced a characteristic inflammatory process found in obese subjects where macrophages infiltrate adipose tissue. The mice also experienced a reduction in inflammatory related factors through a decrease in gene expression. Overall, at the end of the 10-week trial, the group of mice eating an excessive amount without melatonin gained 49% body mass over the control group that ate a normal diet. The group of mice supplemented with melatonin increased their body mass 28% over the control group, but 13% lower than the group eating excess food without melatonin. The researchers believe the data suggest that melatonin could be considered as a therapeutic agent to help mitigate the metabolic and inflammatory conditions triggered in those who are obese.

Should Australia be Shut Down? Will Australia be Shut Down? By Brian Simpson

Things are hotting up in the fear/paranoia stakes regarding the coronavirus, with calls from the Grattan Institute’s chief executive John Daley, to shut down schools and universities to attempt to stem the advance of Covid-19. Well, shut down the universities … it looks like James Reed will get his wish! After all, Trump has just shut down America to Europe:
  https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/03/11/donald-trump-suspends-all-travel-from-european-union-for-30-days-to-fight-coronavirus/
  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8100251/Australia-close-borders-shut-schools-universities-face-coronavirus-epidemic.html

“Australia has been urged to close its borders, shut down schools and universities and cancel mass events or risk facing a 'complete and utter coronavirus epidemic'. Grattan Institute's chief executive John Daley called for Scott Morrison to follow the lead of Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, which have introduced radical social distancing measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. Mr Daley said while some countries' approaches to the outbreak have impacted their economies, they had been successful in reducing virus cases. 'One option is that we can introduce very significant social distancing now and also potentially close the airports to foreign travellers. The consequence of that would be you would probably see the number of cases in Australia drop to zero,' he told The Australian. 'The second option is that you keep doing what we are doing at the moment. At some point it is likely that we will start to see significantly more person-to-person transmission in Australia.' Mr Daley warned if Australia keeps up its 'non-stringent measures like Italy', our cases would climb 'pretty quickly' and the fatality rate would skyrocket. Dr Muhammad Mohsin, who runs a number of GP clinics, called for all public events, schools, businesses, childcare centres and universities to be shut down for a month. 'This is the only way we can avoid a complete and utter epidemic in Australia. Otherwise, the virus will spread and it will devastate our country and our economy. We must do it before winter arrives. This is absolutely critical,' he said.

The Pope and Coronavirus: Sure Brings Out the Absurd! By Peter West

Italy is in lockdown, but the Pope is urging priests to physically go out and comfort those infected by coronavirus … question mark whether this involves hugs along with praying?

  https://www.news18.com/news/world/as-italy-remains-in-lockdown-pope-francis-tells-priests-to-go-out-and-meet-the-coronavirus-affected-2532175.html

“Pope Francis urged Catholic priests on Tuesday to "have the courage" to go out and help those sickened by the novel coronavirus, hours after Italy was placed on a nationwide lockdown. "Let us pray to the Lord also for our priests, that they may have the courage to go out and visit the sick... and to accompany the medical staff and volunteers in the work they do," the pontiff said during a mass in Vatican City. St Peter's Square in the Vatican -- in the centre of the Italian capital Rome -- was almost empty on Tuesday with only a few dozen people walking around, most of them without masks. The Italian government has asked for people not to travel if they can avoid it and to avoid contact with the sick. Officials passed a decree late Monday extending nationwide restrictive measures that had been put in place at the weekend in the hardest-hit northern regions. The restrictions -- including checkpoints on roads and in railway stations -- are set to remain until April 3. Italy is the epicentre of the European virus outbreak with more than 9,000 cases and 463 deaths so far. Globally, more than 110,000 cases have been recorded in over 100 countries, although health experts are hopeful that the virus has peaked in China, where it originated late last year.”

News from Italy By Brian Simpson

A Chinese teacher I work with is keeping up with the alternative views on the coronavirus by using my articles as a clearing ground, so I am grateful for this, since all of the white liberal feminist teachers think I am a racist, but not the Chinese and other ethnic ones, whom I sit with each day at lunch time, while the feminists sit in their own quarantined  area, and well, whinge about how oppressed they are. Anyway, here is an Italian professor hosing down the idea that the coronavirus only knocks over old folk, for the Italians are seeing increasing numbers of young people in hospital. My Chinese teacher friend thinks that the commo Chinese government genetically engineered the virus to kill old people to reduce health care costs. That is horrible, but initially credible. However, the hypothesis is probably refuted by the Italian data on young people now getting the infection.

So, this week we still have not got a clear theory on what is happening with the virus, and it may be some time before we do. In the meantime, keep prepping.

Global Communism Versus the Jungle? The Jungle Any Day! By James Reed

As expected, the new class can see that the coronavirus pandemic is a conceptual and philosophical challenge to the ideology of open borders, since sane countries are doing exactly the opposite, and closing up. Hence, their need to turn up the heat and push the globalist, we-are-all-in-this-together, bs line:
  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/29/opinion/sunday/corona-virus-usa.html

“Forget isolationism. One thing the current moment shows is the folly of presuming that viruses will respect borders — that they can be kept out by walls or wrangled into submission with good intentions. They cannot. Restricting and rescinding foreign health and development aid, pulling global health workers from outbreak zones abroad and undermining health care at home makes Americans more vulnerable to threats like Covid-19.
The best strategy for thwarting this epidemic, and for preventing the next, is to help other nations — wherever they are — fight humanity’s common enemy over there before we have to fight it over here.”

Coronavirus Protection from an Expert By Brian Simpson

Here is some expert advice by an early researcher of the coronavirus, Dr James Robb, a pathologist who is “a recognized expert in biospecimen science with over 50 years of experience in molecular pathology, virology, and genetics. He is board certified in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, cytopathology, and dermatopathology. Dr. Robb is a consulting pathologist to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research (OBBR).” He wrote that we are welcome to share his email, so, here we go:

“Date: February 26, 2020
Subject: What I am doing for the upcoming COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.
Dear Colleagues, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s). I was the first to demonstrate the number of genes the virus contained. Since then, I have kept up with the coronavirus field and its multiple clinical transfers into the human population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different animal sources.
The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable, due to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to be widespread in the US by mid to late March and April.
Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take. These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza seasons, except for the mask and gloves.:

1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.
2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip – do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.
4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.
5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.
6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home’s entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can’t immediately wash your hands.
7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!
What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:
1) Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping, using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in contact with contaminated areas.
Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average – everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs) The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.
2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you – it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth – it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.
3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.
4) Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY “cold-like” symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.

Is the Coronavirus Racist? By Brian Simpson

The debate is continuing over whether of not there is a racial bias to the coronavirus, something which I have an open mind about. VDare has been championing this, and they may be right, but the thesis requires qualification. Italians get infected, and so do Iranians, presumably part of the “white” race, so what gives? My hypothesis is that it is the Nordic and possibly Alpine sub-races that have immunity of various degrees to the disease, maybe a product of past evolution, perhaps the Black Death. Anyway, since even nationalists do not like thinking about dividing up the mystical “white race” (a fear of dividing forces, even though diversity makes it as divided as it could be), they have to deal with the Italian counter-examples.

In Defence of Meat By Mrs Vera West

For meat: at long last some scientists have come forward to debunk claims that meat eating is “evil”:

“A team of UK scholars have fired back at unscientific claims by PETA and other groups that veganism is a “greener” option that eating meat, insisting that meat has “massive social benefits.” Speaking at a panel in central London, scientists from the University of Edinburgh and Scotland’s Rural College argued that eating meat is crucial for the physical and mental health of children, especially in developing countries, adding that that alternatives to livestock farming would not improve land use. “We feel that while livestock production has a range of economic, social and environmental costs and benefits, the costs have perhaps been receiving far more attention recently than some of the benefits,” said Professor Geoff Simm, Director of Global Academy Agriculture and Food Security at the University of Edinburgh. “Meat has massive social benefits,” Simm said. “It’s an important source of dietary protein, energy, highly bioavailable micronutrients, even small amounts of animal-sourced food have a really important effect on the development of children, in the developing world on their cognitive and physical development and they are really important.” Simm also said that claims that veganism would benefit land use are not based on serious research, the Telegraph reported. “Often the argument is made that going vegan would minimise land use, and the modelling studies that have been done demonstrate that that’s not the case,” he said. Prof Mike Coffey, from Scotland’s Rural College expressed his agreement, while adding that livestock breeding actually contributes positively to the environment. “It’s completely unnecessary to go vegan,” Coffey said. “If everybody went vegan it would be devastating for the UK environment. Animals bred for food help boost biodiversity.” Concerns over bovine methane emissions are also being effectively addressed, the panel declared, since researchers are attempting to breed cattle that grow faster and eat less, which could further reduce the amount of methane released by cows. Already the difference in methane emissions from best and worst cattle was about 30 percent, Prof. Coffey said, which means that if all UK farmers used the most digestively efficient animals carbon emissions could be reduced by nearly a third. Experiments in breeding is leading to dairy cows that consume less feed for the amount of milk they produce, Coffey said, and soon livestock farmers will be able to measure methane emissions from groups of animals. “My expectation is that at some point in the near future there will be product labels that relates to the efficiency or carbon impact of the food,” he said. Caution is to be recommended before recommending veganism as a cure-all, said Edinburgh University Professor Andrea Wilson.”
