Professor John P.A. Ioannidis has been one of a few academics who has profoundly challenged parts of the social scientific establishment. He famously published a paper in proclaiming that most published social research findings are false, due to methodical and statistical problems with the research design. This was one part of the infamous “replication crisis,” where work in disciplines like psychology more often than not, fails to be replicable, or cannot be, or methodological and/or statistical flaws are found in the research. The major problem is the flawed or misappropriate use of p-values and aspects of the Neyman-pearson statistics. This is highly complex, but for us it is simpler to conclude that much of the social sciences is just a mess, made much worse by the heavy political nature of it. But, as detailed below, this crisis now extends to medicine, with the Covid issue seeing examples of leading medical journals publishing articles based upon fraudulent data.
