“Police found more than 40 skulls, dozens of bones and a fetus in a glass jar next to an altar in the den of suspected drug traffickers in Mexico City during a raid this week, authorities said on Sunday. Four of the skulls were built into the altar in the central Tepito neighborhood, where police arrested 31 people on Tuesday on suspicion of drug cartel activity, the city government said in a statement. A judge ordered 27 of the suspects released. A photo distributed by the Mexico City attorney general’s office showed skulls clustered around the altar, which had a cross behind it adorned with a horned wooden face mask. To the right of the altar was a painted wall full of symbols that included a pyramid topped with a hand, celestial bodies and the head of a goat with a hexagram between its horns, according to photos of the room published by local media. In front of the wall stood a variety of objects, including dozens of wooden sticks with colored markings. A spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office said authorities were still investigating the provenance of the skulls, at least 42 of which had been found. Investigators also discovered knives, 40 jawbones, the fetus and 30 leg or arm bones at the site, the office said. It was not yet clear whether the fetus was human, the spokeswoman said.”

     Would polar bears be tasty? Would polar bear steaks be tender and juicy, roasting away while one sat in an igloo, the icy winds raging outside? To The Age        Yes, the British people have indeed reached a turning point ("Brexit election puts UK at historic crossroads", 2/11). However, it is nonsense to suggest that there is any danger of the UK "turning the English Channel into a new Berlin Wall." It is rather a question of whether, collectively, the British people have the insight and the nerve to avoid being further imprisoned within an EU that is busy, as the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights show, in erecting new walls to keep out traditional freedoms that have been rightly cherished by Britons in a long history that begins with the wisdom of Prince Alfred and the signing of Magna Carta. And remember, an entirely independent UK after a successful and genuine Brexit can still participate in European culture and trade with the peoples of Europe.

To The Australian         Greg Sheridan states truly that if Brexit is defeated "the very idea of Britain will be humiliated" ("British poll is truly an election for the ages, a hinge of history", 2-3/11). It is worth asking what that idea is. A triumphalist answer in 2019 that ignores the many failings of the British in their long history will not do. More modestly, it is possible to find an answer in the institution of the English monarchy and the pledges made by the Sovereign at the time of coronation. In simple terms British tradition honours the sacred and recognises its primacy in the affairs of state. Secondly, it upholds an idea of service and an ideal of chivalry drawn from Christian teaching. Thirdly, it recognises the dignity of the person and the crucial importance of political freedom in the life of the nation. Fourthly, it possesses a magnificent legal tradition that, properly wielded, offers the people protections from power-mongers and selfish elites. Incorporation into the EU threatens the British with the loss of all of these benefits and the effective end of their national story.

To The Age        A feature of Western European culture since World War Two has been the ongoing demonisation of the so-called "extreme right" or "hard right" in popular and mainstream public forums. Is it possible that this will lead in the UK to a failure to achieve Brexit because the Conservative Party will not form an alliance with Nigel Farage's Brexit Party? Common sense suggests that, with the UK's electoral system of first-past-the-post voting, such an agreement should be forged. Farage may well be right, too, that Boris Johnson's deal with the UK is "just not Brexit" ("Fast-forward to the election", 31/10). Does it really promise a full return of sovereignty and the clear protection of free speech by a traditional legal system?

To The Australian         The two voices to whom the British people should most of all be listening as they prepare for the coming elections are both those of dead men: George Orwell and Alexander Solzhenitsyn. They showed in their great novels with terrible clarity what life becomes like in modern, post-industrial states if political freedom is lost. In order for a genuine Brexit to happen and such freedom to be regained for the UK, there needs to be an unequivocal alliance in the next five weeks between the Conservative Party and the Brexit Party. Then, after a genuine Brexit has been achieved, the new British government needs to bring to an end the life of the Tony Blair created Supreme Court and avoid further corruption of British legal tradition. It is astonishing that these matters are not at the forefront of public debate at this stage.

As an example; ‘we had to drain Menindee Lakes, or the water would have been lost to evaporation.’ “We now have the wicked and unjust situation where this out of control Authority is denying available water to desperate end users by claiming that they are compelled by law to release this fresh water to the sea, while farmers and Municipalities are left without water.

The Ivy League school invited Soleil Ho to speak, with the event co-sponsored by Yale’s Poynter Fellowship in Journalism, the Yale Center for the Study of Race, Indegenity, and Transnational Migration, the Timothy Dwight College (a dorm), the Yale Sustainable Food Program, the Asian American Cultural Center, according to a university news release. “...a white supremacist, abelist, hetero-patriarchial, capitalist culture” Ho ties the food industry to gender, race, and class in her podcast and often has guests including Julia Turshen, author of a cookbook called “Feed the Resistance.”  “You include a lot of really obvious tells for your politics and I appreciate that,” Ho tells Turshen in an October 2018 episode, titled, “Sheet Pan Chicken with a side of Social Justice.” “In the Thanksgiving menu, you mention indigenous activists and the reasons why a lot of people might not like Thanksgiving.” “I got to put so much of myself into this book, which includes both my love of cooking at home...but also a lot of social justice messaging,” the author responded. “And I think that cookbooks are a very useful and effective and sort of a powerful tool.” Ho spoke at the 2019 XOXO Festival, an event for independent artists in Portland, Ore. that features artists “who live and work online.” During her speech, she highlighted “more stories by and about people whose food ways and livelihoods have been marginalized and undervalued by a white supremacist, abelist, hetero-patriarchial, capitalist culture.” In August, Ho critiqued Popeyes’ chicken sandwich, calling it "a cheap product where the true cost is carried by marginalized people and animals besides the consumer." Matthew S. Tanico, associate director of Yale’s Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration, told Campus Reform that “This year’s series focuses on indigenous food sovereignty and race.”
