Romano, a former NBCC president and its current vice president of grants, also said he bore no “culpability” for the supposed “erasure of BIPOC [black, indigenous and people of color] voices” in publishing, as the statement described the industry. “I myself have probably written more articles and reviews about Philadelphia’s black literature and traditions in my 25 years at the [Philadelphia] Inquirer than anyone living, black or white,” he wrote in the email to fellow board members that is now being used against him. He also objected to the media’s portrayal of his comments in the private email, telling The Daily Pennsylvanian: “I am pro-Black Lives Matter. “The St. Louis, Missouri, couple who held guns in their hands in hopes of preventing protesters from damaging their property are now facing felony charges. Fox News reported that Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner told the Associated Press that Mark and Patricia McCloskey will face felony charge for “unlawful use of a weapon” and also a misdemeanor charge for fourth degree assault. On June 28, a video was posted to Twitter showing the McCloskeys holding firearms to protect their home: On June 30, Breitbart News reported an investigation had been opened against the couple. The New York Post quoted Gardner saying, “I am alarmed at the events that occurred over the weekend, where peaceful protestors were met by guns.” Gardner added, “We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation or threat of deadly force will not be tolerated.” On July 11, Breitbart News reported that the rifle in the June 28 video was seized from the McCloskey’s home as police executed a search warrant. More recently, the Hill reported that Missouri Gov. Mike Parson believed the McCloskeys simply “did what they legally should do.” He added, “A mob does not have the right to charge your property. They had every right to protect themselves.” Parson used a July 18 tweet to say, “We will not allow law-abiding citizens to be targeted for exercising their constitutional rights.”

“A NSW law firm that last month congratulated Victorians for not taking COVID-19 tests is behind a push to get No Jab No Play rules in SA scrapped. G & B Lawyers - with offices in Sydney and Wollongong - has told supporters it is confident an injunction to freeze the commencement date of No Jab No Play laws for child care centres in SA will be successful. The laws will take effect on August 7. But Health Minister Stephen Wade said any reduction to vaccines, especially during the COVID-19 era, was reckless. G & B Lawyers partner Nathan Buckley has set up a GoFundMe page aimed at raising money to take the State Government to court arguing the new laws are in breach of the Constitution. Last month a post on the G & B Lawyers Facebook page congratulated Victorians for “exercising their right not to have medical interventions forced upon them by refusing to be tested for COVID-19.” “Well done to you Victorians. Keep exercising your rights,” the post said. Another post attributed to Mr Buckley raised concerns about aged care workers having to have a flu vaccination. “Through the so-called public health laws, the Australian Government are trying to control every aspect of our lives,” the post said. Mr Wade said the government is firm in its resolve to protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases through its No Jab, No Play legislation. “The legislation will exclude unvaccinated children from early childhood services,” Mr Wade said. “Unfortunately, the access of children to services will be disrupted unless their parents arrange for them to be vaccinated but as we struggle to find a vaccine for COVID-19, it would be reckless not to protect children, their services and the wider community from the diseases for which we have vaccines.” Mr Buckley, who did not respond to The Advertiser on Tuesday, is asking for $33,000 to help fight the case. On Monday a new post on the legal firm’s Facebook page said “Barrister’s advice that we have reasonable prospects of success to overthrow the SA no jab no play laws”. The advice suggested the new SA laws are inconsistent with Commonwealth disability discrimination, but did not explain how.”

     It had to happen: now there is a move to remove the names of body parts, even diseases, named after males, because, males are bad, bad, bad …  well, at least white males. “Human body parts named after “men, kings and gods” have been deemed irrelevant and misogynistic by some Australian doctors who no longer seek to salute the ideas of dead, male anatomists. A specialist obstetrician in the state of Queensland, gynaecologist and anatomy lecturer, Dr Kristin Small, is urging her students to drop gender bias and what she calls irrelevant and misogynistic medical language. She believes the terms invoke the jaded beliefs of older generations and wants more practical and descriptive terms for body parts. “I think we have a personal choice to decolonise our language and these historical terms will fade out,” Dr Small told the Brisbane Courier Mail. Dr Small makes sure her students still know the accepted, older terms for exam purposes but maintains there are always alternatives for the “dead man’s name.” Council member for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Dr Nisha Khot, is another teaching trainee doctors to look at alternative terminology. The newspaper reports she also wants to defeat a patriarchal history of medical definition which reinforces the fact women are not represented in most of the 700 parts of the body named after people. “The young trainee doctors are mostly keen to learn the more relevant language and are often shocked when they hear the origins of some medical terms,” she said. The word “hysterectomy” originated from a time when women were treated for female hysteria by removing the uterus. Surgical instruments and tactics are also named after men, such as the Pfannensteil incision, which was named after a man who published a paper on incisions in 1900. The Achilles tendon, the tough band of fibrous tissue that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, is named after the mythological Greek warrior, Achilles. Dr Small lamented much of the female reproductive system is named “after dead dudes” and inhibits her desire to subvert the patriarchy in a modern, practical way.”
