     Alison Davies (28/8) wants to see same-sex marriage regarded as ‘normal’. Does she mean ‘average’ (the norm being the mean) or ‘right, true’? Only the latter could be applicable. Australia needs to get the answer right on this. Maggie Morgan (28/8) confuses equality before the law with ‘marriage equality’ and then claims that the plebiscite ‘is about equality and basic human rights.’ This doesn’t answer the concerns ‘no’ advocates have expressed about the interests of children and the interests of society. The plebiscite is actually about whether or not these interests trump those of same-sex attracted people. Maybe they do and sacred tradition is wise to insist that marriage should be viewed as the union of a man and a woman for the purpose of raising children securely to the ultimate benefit of society as a whole.

     Rejection of ‘supernatural explanations’ of the universe and scornful descriptions of them as ‘a fairy tale’ (Letters, 28/8) fly in the face of abundant evidence that there is much more to human nature than positivistic science and the logical mind can see. First and foremost is their total inability to explain why there is a universe at all. ‘It just happened’ won’t do.
     There is an enormous amount of convincing testimony from cultures worldwide over ten thousand years or more that intuition, conscience, inspiration, ‘the sixth sense’ and ‘second sight’ really do exist and afford vital guidance for individuals and societies. Through them the divine speaks to the human. We are more than we ordinarily perceive ourselves to be. That is why philosophical tradition in ancient Greece stressed the vital first requirement to ‘know oneself’ - to know, in fact, that one is far more than what first appears. The teaching of Jesus about the need for a ‘second birth’ makes the same point.
     I tremble for Australia if the nation collectively turns its back on these windows to eternity.

     Kevin Donnelly has beautifully summarized the nature of authentic education (‘Wear it Purple Day and other cultural-left moves sending us puce’, 21/8). Yes, it should be impartial and balanced, promote civility, humility, honesty and respect for valid reasoning, provide a fair assessment of our Western European cultural heritage and encourage appreciation of genuine artistic achievements.
     The wreckers on the left fear such an approach, because it exposes the falsity of much of what they proclaim and thus frustrates the inner satisfaction they derive from tearing down not just statues but a whole way of fruitful and joyful civilization. Thus, mimicking the protective reflex of the skunk, they pour out a tirade of insults, whereby patriots are denounced as racists or xenophobes and traditionalists are called bigots and reactionaries. The times are on the nose and ripe for another great prophet.

     Depreciators of our custom of celebrating on Australia Day the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 (Letters, 21/8) forget how much there is in that event worthy of continued affirmation today.  Captain Phillip, a man of sterling courage and integrity, led a group of other very brave men to successfully establish an outpost of his culture in a frighteningly remote and puzzling land. Without their daring and boldness, the nation we live in today with such good fortune would not have been later established (1901) after the pioneering phase of the setting up of the colonies.
     The Eureka Rebellion, the Harvester decision, Federation, the Furneaux Islands Festival - none of these can match the human heroism and dedication of Phillip and his men, the drama of the landing or the relevance to us all of the event.

     I am not sure how this will be played out. Most people dismiss the idea of Australia copping a nuke, but there is a scenario where North Korea shows that it means business by nuking Australia. Trump allows this, making us a sacrificial lamb, just like was done at Gallipoli. Australia, is, after all, expendable to these big players.

The laws relate to weapons that are not firearms. For example, Biblical era missile launchers, potato and water balloon launchers are banned. No crossbows, no slingshots as used by kids a few decades ago, all types of martial arts weapons (anything found in a Bruce Lee movie), no personal alarms, and the list goes on and on.

     But, to simplify, in America, which holds to the English common law position, now eroded in England and Australia, everything is allowed except that which is prohibited. But, in Australia, everything is prohibited, except what is allowed. As with every other issue, these erosions of freedoms have been allowed to occur over many decades because the masses of ordinary sheeple people just don’t take a stand against them.
