“Students at Brown University gathered in November to teach their peers about the merits of doing away with the U.S. prison system. A student group by the name of RailRoad held the event titled "Prison Abolition 101" on Nov. 8. The group seeks to ensure that the American prison system is "destroyed" and believes that incarceration is inherently unjust and unproductive. RailRoad member Grace Austin stated during the event that “the end goal is to not have prisons as any form of incarceration," and that "punishment at any stage doesn’t guarantee any kind of growth," according to a report by The Brown Daily Herald. The student group's stated mission is to create a "world where the Prison Industrial Complex in all of its forms has been destroyed and built in its place are systems of accountability that allow for healing and growth." "Prisons were founded in the ideas of punishing the poor, punishing people of color,” presenter Aida Sherif said, adding “I don’t see it as an institution that can ever fully break away from those foundations.” “Our society is constructed in a way that would have us believe prisons are absolutely necessary,” Sherif said. “People perceive it as crazy, unreasonable, dangerous, too radical. Abolition is not anarchy.” The event reportedly did not present concrete plans or a timeline to achieve this "abolition," but rather emphasized that the complete dismantling of the U.S. prison system was a realistic long-term goal. In October, Railroad presented a proposal calling upon the university to cease the consideration of criminal aspects such as conviction history in its hiring processes, and even to implement a quota of "formerly incarcerated community members."

     For the first time in as long as I could remember, I took a bus from the suburbs into town, on Sunday. Yeah, free travel, even with my Senior, dole and other bludger cards. And there I was thinking that I would be the only feral person on the ride. But to my utter delight, at each stop, a new and crazier character got on. The said crazed person dominated the proceedings until the king of madmen got on. He promptly told off an Aboriginal woman with a child in a pusher, for not cleaning ice-cream off her child’s face, a lot of it. He then took the liberty of doing do himself, wiping the ice-cream onto his hand, then smearing it on the seat. Was this a kind thing to do, or was it child molestation? I pondered this as he began a loud conversation with himself about bus timetables and what number bus did what. I thought this was simply random neurons firing due to lack of meds, which could be so, but he seemed to know what he was talking about. The man knew buses as much as I knew dumpster diving. Soon everyone in the bus asked him timetable information, forgetting to even use their smart phones.

It depends how you view the very idea of democracy. This does not necessarily mean equality or "one person, one vote". It can also mean rule with which the people are happy because it is in consonance with human nature and the variety of characters found among human persons and communities, some vastly more gifted than others. An aristocracy without universal franchise could fit the bill, but not a money-based oligarchy. Its fun to make fun of royal persons and the institution itself, whether in Australia or Id. However, at the heart of monarchy are serious values conducive to human welfare to which Altman does not do adequate justice: sacred truth, human dignity, chivalry and ceremonial beauty. Nor is it true that "few of us take much notice" of our ongoing homage to the Queen.

I opened the door and found a whole bunch of police officers who wanted me to come out and ‘talk to them’.      Australia is a land of deserts, droughts, floods, bushfires, flammable forests and fire-prone grasslands – these conditions have developed since the start of the Holocene Warm Era about twelve thousand years ago. All previous Australian bushies, both black and white, have recognised the key principle of fire management in Australia – you can have many small managed “cool” fires in early spring or a few unplanned disastrous “hot” fires consuming a heavy fuel load in hot dry winds in late spring. (Arsonists have other priorities and light their fires at these most dangerous times.) Every generation of Australians sees its fire disasters and the worst ones get names – “Black Thursday” in 1851, “Black Friday” in 1939, “Ash Wednesday” in 1983, and the worst to date “Black Saturday” in 2009. Not even an armada of expensive water bombers will stop these bushfires – at that stage fire can only be prevented or contained by fire.

     Good fire management disappeared as rural voters were outvoted by the green leafy suburbs. Urban greens thought we could prevent all fires and encourage wildlife by locking up more parks and encouraging fire-loving, oil-containing eucalypts and flammable weeds close to towns and dwellings. (Many native plants require fire to burst open their rock-hard seed pods.) Graham Lloyd of the Australian notes that even the Hippies of Nimbin blame greens for “the incendiary state of the Australian bush”. Even more stupid are those who think politicians can control or abolish droughts and bushfires by banning the use of coal and oil in a futile attempt to lower global temperature. The sun, the oceans and recurring El Nino droughts will dwarf all efforts of puny politicians. We need good fire and forest management and prosecution of arsonists, not costly climate distractions.

To The Australian        Rachel Perkins states, in the latest effort to promote an unjust privileging of a small minority of Australians over others ("At the heart of the voice is just our desire for honesty", 15/11) that Uluru (or Ayers Rock) is "the symbolic and spiritual heart of our nation." Whose nation? And on what grounds does she make this claim? How can that stone monolith be the centre of a political order, founded originally by Britain, which is rightly described as a commonwealth? Yes, a wealth shared by all Australians, the great majority of whom have no Aboriginal ancestry. Ms Perkins also claims that she feels "uniquely Australian", but in reality there is no such uniqueness for her or any other Australian. What she means is that she has her own unique ethnic ancestry. Each other Australian can claim the same for himself or herself, but it does not pertain at all to their constitutional status as Australians. There is something fundamentally contradictory in her claims: she wants to divide while at the same time claiming to unite.

To The Age        Rachel Perkins is living in a dream-world if she believes that "Australians should unite behind the Uluru Statement from the Heart" ("Director calls for Indigenous action", 15/11), for it is a fundamentally divisive document seeking to unjustly privilege a tiny majority of Australians over the rest of us. Claiming that we should "set aside" our differences, she is busy insisting that new ones should be created. There is no "cult of forgetfulness" involved. We all know that the Aboriginal tribes lost control of the continent to British settlement, a happening that cannot be reversed. Aboriginal culture and history is widely honoured and rightly so. However, in 2019 Australians having Aboriginal ancestry should accept the fact that, constitutionally, they are on a par with all other Australians. They should not follow a separatist path that is against the true interests of the nation.
