Will Russia Destroy the Internet? By Richard Miller (Somewhere in Europe)

The chaos caused by the July 22, 2024 Microsoft blue screen of death scenario, and the lesser discussed problem of the DDoS attack on July 30, 2024, would pale into insignificance compared to the possible Russian attack upon the internet infrastructure of the West. Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said in June 2024 that the undersea internet cables had become a legitimate target for Russia. This was motivated by Russia's belief that the West was involved in blowing up the Nord Stream 2 pipeline: "If we proceed from the proven complicity of Western countries in blowing up the Nord Streams, then we have no constraints - even moral - left to prevent us from destroying the ocean floor cable communications of our enemies," Medvedev posted on Telegram. While the latest news has been to implicate the Ukraine in the attack, supposedly done by amateurs, Russia does not believe this for the level of technical expertise in deep underwater explosives would not be something possessed by amateurs.

An attack on vulnerable undersea internet cables would create socio-economic chaos in the West: https://www.aol.com/news/russia-signaling-could-wests-internet-145211316.html.Satellites are also vulnerable, but 95 percent of international data is transferred via these cables. If they go, the West is in big trouble.
