Warnings on an Increasingly Aggressive China, By James Reed
Chinese troops have never been this close to the Polish border in history, as the Chinese military will conduct joint exercises named Eagle Assault-2024 near Brest, Belarus, close to the Polish border. The idea is to enhance military cooperation between the two countries. It will apparently be a yearly thing. It is also a message to the West of what is to come.
Four Chinese military vessels were even detected off the coast of Alaska but were inside international waters. Not so for 66 Chinese military aircraft and seven miliary vessels that were operating around Taiwan, as a show of force to test Taiwanese defences. The Chinese government said that China was merely protecting "its sovereignty and territorial integrity" which includes Taiwan which it claims among other lands in the South China Sea.
With the weakness of the Biden administration, China has become more aggressive. However, one of the few strong administrators still left in the Biden administration, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, has warned the Australia government that Australia faces an existential threat from China's increased strategic co-operation with Russia, Iran and North Korea, and must massively increase its defence budget. China for one thing is set to establish a military base in Pacific which would be a challenge to Australia. To counter this, he said: "I think that's probably the case that we're all going to have to do more."
"We need short-term stocks of critical ordnance. We need more shipbuilding across the alliance."
Clearly Australia if it is to survive is going to need weapons far beyond a few ships which will be vulnerable to hypersonic missiles. Australia will need to take innovative leaps forward, with lasers, AI, and robotics and its own hypersonic missiles, and nuclear weapons, I believe. As I often say, this should have been done in the 1950s.
