The Digital ID Bill was passed on May 16, 2024, and the Act will commence on 1 December 2024. While the government pushed the line that the scheme will be voluntary, it has been noted that already there has been a movement to require Australian electricians in Queensland to renew their work licence or reinstate an expired work licence, to follow this: "To access the online self-paced Skills Maintenance Assessment you will need to verify your identity using myGovID. The email address registered with myGovID will need to be the same email associated with your electrical work licence record. Update your email address on your licence record."

It is an example of how by the inevitability of gradualism, the so-called "voluntary" digital ID will become impossible to avoid. It is going to make life even more difficult than it is, but resist it, we must.
