The Decadence and Degeneracy of the Left, By James Reed

In recent years, the political Left has exhibited a troubling shift towards insularity, intolerance, and a pervasive sense of moral superiority. This transformation has not only alienated potential allies but has also undermined the very principles of inclusivity and open discourse that the Left traditionally championed.

A study by the More in Common polling group reveals that Left-wing activists, termed "progressive activists," are significantly less inclined to collaborate with political adversaries compared to other groups. Representing 8-10 percent of the UK population, these activists are more prone to criticise and view those holding differing opinions as misled. This behavior contributes to the repeated failures of progressive campaigns and the global rise of the far-Right. The study suggests that these activists overestimate public support for their views and are often unwilling to campaign alongside political opponents, highlighting a significant divergence from the general population's opinions. The authors propose that progressive activists need a more inclusive and persuasive approach to reconnect with the broader public and achieve social change.

This insularity is further compounded by a disturbing trend of narcissism within Leftist circles. Steven Tucker, in an article for The Daily Sceptic, argues that the Left has been "hijacked by narcissists" whose self-absorption and performative activism detract from genuine social progress. Tucker contends that this narcissistic influence leads to a focus on personal virtue signalling rather than substantive policy discussions, thereby eroding public trust and engagement.

The consequences of this ideological echo chamber are evident in recent political developments. In Germany, the federal elections saw the conservative CDU/CSU party, led by Friedrich Merz, projected to win, with the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) achieving its highest-ever result, coming in second place. This surge in Right-wing support can be partially attributed to the Left's failure to engage constructively with broader societal concerns, including immigration and national identity. The Left's tendency to dismiss opposing viewpoints as inherently bigoted or uninformed has only served to alienate large segments of the population, driving them towards the Right.

Moreover, the Left's preoccupation with identity politics and moral posturing has often led to the suppression of free speech and open debate. Dissenting opinions, even within Leftist ranks, are frequently met with hostility and ostracism. This culture of intolerance stifles intellectual diversity and hinders the development of robust, well-rounded policy solutions.

Hence, the Left's current trajectory of insularity, narcissism, and intolerance poses a significant threat to its credibility and effectiveness. The Left is now being seen for what it is, a movement to achieve power for certain elites, hiding behind high moral phrases about social justice, where in fact, it is the social injustice movement in the extreme!
