The COVID Lockdown Disaster Must Not Be Forgotten or Forgiven
History will judge the years 2020–2022 as one of the greatest policy catastrophes of modern times. The decision by governments across the world, including Australia, to impose unprecedented lockdowns on their own citizens was not just an overreaction. It was a deliberate abandonment of centuries of public health wisdom, civil liberties, and basic human decency.
We were told it was necessary. We were told it would be temporary. We were told it would save lives. What we got instead was one of the most destructive experiments ever conducted on a free society.
The Human Cost
The lockdowns did not merely pause the economy. They shattered lives.
Mental health crises exploded, especially among young people. Domestic violence surged. Learning losses for children, particularly the disadvantaged, were catastrophic and will echo for decades. Small businesses were crushed while big corporations thrived. Billions of people were subjected to house arrest, separated from family, denied the right to mourn loved ones, and stripped of basic freedoms that previous generations fought wars to protect.
The elderly died alone. Weddings, funerals, and births were turned into sterile, bureaucratic ordeals. Entire communities were treated like prisoners rather than citizens.
And for what?
The virus still spread. The most locked-down places often suffered similar or worse outcomes than more open ones. Sweden, which largely avoided harsh lockdowns, did not see the apocalypse so confidently predicted. Meanwhile, the collateral damage: delayed cancer treatments, missed vaccinations, economic destruction, and the explosion of government debt, continues to exact a heavy toll.
The Lie That Justified It All
The justification rested on fear and flawed models. We were told "two weeks to flatten the curve." Then it became "until the vaccine." Then "until everyone was vaccinated." The goalposts moved relentlessly because the underlying premise, that we could suppress a highly contagious respiratory virus through coercion, was always false.
Worse, many of the people pushing the hardest policies knew the data did not support them. They lied about masks, about natural immunity, about the risk to children, and about the safety of the vaccines. They censored dissenting scientists. They destroyed careers of those who refused to go along with the narrative.
This was not public health. This was power.
Australia's Shame
Australia went harder than most. We had some of the strictest lockdowns on earth next to communist China: curfews, border closures between states, police chasing people for walking their dogs, and children denied normal schooling for years.
The arrogance was staggering. Political leaders and health bureaucrats treated citizens like children who needed to be punished for disobedience. The "zero COVID" fantasy became a national delusion, enforced with fines, arrests, and public shaming.
The damage to our social fabric, mental health, education system, and economy is still being tallied. The trust that was destroyed may never fully return.
We Must Not Forgive
Forgiveness without repentance is cheap grace. The architects of this disaster, the politicians, bureaucrats, media figures, and "experts" who lied, censored, and destroyed lives, have largely faced no consequences. Many have been rewarded with book deals, promotions, and comfortable retirements.
We owe it to the victims: the small business owners who lost everything, the children whose development was stunted, the elderly who died alone, the workers thrown onto the scrapheap, to remember what was done to them.
We must document it. We must study it. We must ensure that never again can a government treat its own people as laboratory subjects in a grand utopian experiment.
The COVID lockdown era was a moral failure of staggering proportions. Forgetting it would be the final insult to those who suffered.
We must not forgive. We must not forget. And we must never allow it to happen again.
