Modern civilisation is very proud of itself. It builds skyscrapers, codes algorithms, and congratulates its enlightened values every night on the news. Yet it has managed to overlook one tiny but fatal problem: it has stopped reproducing. Industrial societies, from Beijing to Tokyo to Sydney, have become the demographic equivalent of monasteries without the piety. Everyone is free, liberated, and childless. The great dream of progress has produced a future without people in it.

The problem is not just that birth rates are low, but that they are lowest among the most educated and intelligent, the very group you would expect to pass on the mental machinery needed to keep a technical society running. PhD's have two letters more than children. Engineers and doctors are so busy keeping the system alive they forget to replace themselves. Meanwhile, the least equipped to sustain complex civilisation continue to reproduce at higher rates, though even they eventually adopt the same contraceptive religion once they move into the city and get a Netflix subscription. The dysgenic spiral tightens with every generation.

Women's liberation plays its role. After all, why raise a family when you can raise a wine glass at a rooftop bar? Why endure the drudgery of childrearing when the office offers endless meetings about diversity strategy? The liberation movement did not just liberate women from patriarchy, it liberated them from the future. Add cheap contraception, the cult of individual freedom, and the absurd cost of living in a shoebox apartment, and children are reduced to a lifestyle accessory, like a dog with a stroller.

Genetics still matters, no matter how many glossy think-pieces claim otherwise. If the intelligent have fewer children, then intelligence declines. Social decline only compounds the problem, destroying the very educational and cultural environments that once elevated the average. A society that requires IQ, discipline, and foresight, is busy self-selecting against IQ, discipline, and foresight. This is not sustainable. It is a suicide pact with fertility charts.

The politicians, terrified of telling the truth, point to immigration as a solution. Yet importing populations from elsewhere does not stop the overall pattern, it only creates new tensions, new costs, and new fractures in societies already stretched thin. Migrant birth rates inevitably decline too, once the cultural virus of consumerism and contraception does its work. Immigration is not a fix, it is demographic Ponzi economics, pushing collapse a few decades further down the line.

What we are left with is the absurd spectacle of societies congratulating themselves on being too advanced to survive. Civilisations that once conquered the world, now cannot conquer the urge to swipe on dating apps into their forties. The same nations that split the atom and mapped the genome, are about to be undone by their inability to produce babies. A technical society without replacement fertility is like a rocket without fuel: impressive for a moment, before it plunges back to earth.

The West prides itself on progress, but it has redefined progress as extinction by choice. It is digging its own grave, stylishly, with equality slogans on the tombstone. The future belongs not to those who preach about sustainability, but to those who simply sustain themselves by reproducing. History is not written by the woke, the liberated, or the technically advanced. It is written by the people who breed.
