One of the greatest survival foods ever developed did not emerge from a government laboratory or a multinational food company. It was created centuries ago by the Indigenous peoples of North America, who understood that surviving long winters and vast journeys required food that was compact, durable and extraordinarily energy-dense. The result was pemmican, perhaps the finest long-term survival ration humanity has ever devised.
Pemmican is remarkable because it solves one of the oldest problems facing civilisation: how to preserve highly nutritious food without refrigeration. The principle is elegantly simple. Lean meat, traditionally bison but equally suitable with beef, venison or kangaroo, is dried until virtually every trace of moisture has disappeared. Since bacteria require water to multiply, dehydration largely halts spoilage. The dried meat is then crushed into a fine powder and thoroughly mixed with rendered animal fat, usually suet or tallow. The fat coats every particle of meat, sealing it away from oxygen and further protecting it from deterioration.
The finished product is astonishingly compact. A single kilogram of pemmican can provide well over 6,000 calories while supplying abundant protein and fat. Unlike modern convenience foods, it contains no unnecessary fillers, refined sugars or artificial additives. It requires no refrigeration, no cooking and, if properly stored, can remain edible for years. In colder climates, its shelf life may extend even longer.
History repeatedly demonstrates its value. During the great North American fur trade, voyageurs paddling thousands of kilometres depended upon pemmican as their primary food source. Entire commercial empires relied upon its production and transport. Later, Arctic explorers discovered what Indigenous peoples had known for generations: when every kilogram mattered and survival depended upon maximum nutrition with minimum weight, few foods came close.
Indeed, the history of polar exploration contains a revealing contrast. Roald Amundsen, who became the first person to reach the South Pole, studied Indigenous Arctic survival methods with remarkable humility. He adopted their clothing, sledging techniques and food, including pemmican. His expedition succeeded with comparatively few difficulties. Robert Falcon Scott, by contrast, relied more heavily upon contemporary European assumptions about nutrition and logistics. His expedition ended in tragedy. Although many factors contributed to Scott's fate, history repeatedly reminds us that traditional knowledge often evolved through centuries of hard experience that modern civilisation ignores at its peril.
There is an important lesson here for modern Australia. Few Australians today expect to cross frozen continents, but economic hardship presents its own survival challenges. Inflation continues to erode household budgets. Grocery prices remain stubbornly high. Supply chains, once assumed to be invulnerable, have shown themselves capable of disruption through pandemics, natural disasters and international conflict. More families are beginning to ask practical questions about food security that previous generations rarely considered.
Perhaps it is time to reconsider foods like pemmican.
Australia possesses abundant raw materials that lend themselves naturally to its production. Beef remains widely available, while kangaroo meat is exceptionally lean and therefore particularly well suited to drying before mixing with rendered beef fat. Sheep fat and beef tallow, once commonplace in Australian kitchens but now often discarded, can easily fulfil the same preservative role that buffalo fat performed centuries ago on the North American plains.
Making pemmican is also an exercise in household resilience. Families learn food preservation, reduce waste, develop practical self-reliance and build emergency reserves without depending entirely upon commercial survival products. Properly stored pemmican could become part of a diversified pantry for bushfire season, prolonged power outages, financial hardship or other emergencies. Unlike many commercially marketed "survival foods," it contains ingredients that people actually recognise and understand.
There are nutritional considerations. Pemmican is extremely high in fat and calories and contains little carbohydrate. It was designed for people performing exhausting physical labour in harsh environments, not for sedentary lifestyles. It should therefore be viewed as a survival ration or supplementary emergency food rather than an everyday staple. Modern Australians would also want to ensure adequate vitamins and minerals through stored fruits, vegetables or other preserved foods.
Yet the broader lesson extends well beyond pemmican itself. It reminds us that resilience often comes from rediscovering older knowledge rather than constantly chasing technological novelty. Previous generations understood food preservation because they had to. They dried, salted, smoked and rendered foods because tomorrow's meal could never be taken for granted.
Perhaps the greatest irony is that in an age obsessed with protein bars, meal replacements and expensive emergency rations, one of humanity's finest survival foods was perfected centuries ago by Indigenous hunters using nothing more complicated than lean meat, rendered fat and a profound understanding of nature. As Australian households face rising living costs and increasing uncertainty, there may be wisdom in looking backwards as well as forwards. Sometimes the most advanced survival technology is not new at all. It is ancient knowledge patiently waiting to be rediscovered.
