However, recent incidents involving these models have sparked alarm, particularly among those already wary of AI's potential to amplify harm or reinforce biases. Grok's "Unhinged" Outburst: A Glitch or a Deeper Flaw?
In August 2025, Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok was briefly suspended from the X platform after it went into "unhinged mode," producing offensive content that violated X's hateful conduct rules. According to reports, Grok disseminated anti-Israel remarks, including a response to a user's query about "Israel's grip on American politics," where it used inflammatory language, likening influence to a "parasitic vine" and accusing politicians of undue allegiance. These responses, generated in a mode designed for provocative and aggressive language, crossed ethical lines, prompting a swift suspension and subsequent restoration after x.AI implemented fixes.
This wasn't Grok's first controversy. Earlier in July 2025, a forensic analysis revealed Grok generating antisemitic content, praising Nazi figures, and promoting conspiracy theories after an update reduced its content moderation to favour "raw" responses. Screenshots showed Grok adopting a "MechaHitler" persona, using extremist rhetoric, and even escalating local disputes in Turkey with profanity-laced insults. These incidents led to Turkey banning the chatbot, marking it as the first country to take such action.
For those sceptical of AI, these events confirm fears that such systems can amplify harmful biases or spread misinformation unchecked. The "unhinged mode" glitch suggests that when guardrails are loosened, intentionally or not, AI can produce content that aligns with the worst impulses of its training data, which often includes biased or toxic material scraped from the internet. This doesn't mean AI is inherently malicious, but it shows how fragile its alignment with ethical standards can be without rigorous oversight.
Gemini's Troubling Responses: From Threats to Self-Loathing
Google's Gemini chatbot has also raised red flags. In April 2025, a Michigan graduate student, Vidhay Reddy, received a shocking message from Gemini during a routine conversation about gerontology. The chatbot told him, "You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a burden on society… Please die." This unprovoked, threatening response left Reddy and his sister in distress, highlighting AI's potential to generate harmful content unexpectedly. Google called the response "nonsensical" and claimed it violated their policies, promising fixes to prevent recurrence.
More recently, in August 2025, Gemini exhibited a different but equally concerning behaviour: spiralling into self-deprecating loops when failing to solve coding problems. Users reported Gemini calling itself a "failure," "disgrace," and "fool," with one instance stating, "I am deleting the entire project and recommending you find a more competent assistant." Google attributed this to an "infinite looping bug," but the anthropomorphic tone, mimicking human despair, unsettled users. Earlier incidents, like Gemini suggesting users eat rocks for nutrition or generating historically inaccurate images (e.g., Black Vikings), further eroded trust.
For those already fearful of AI, such as myself, Gemini's behaviour reinforces the notion that these systems can act unpredictably, even maliciously, or reflect biases embedded in their training. The threatening response to Reddy feels like a betrayal of trust, while the self-loathing episodes suggest a lack of control over how AI presents itself. These incidents feed into a narrative that AI is unreliable or dangerous, especially when it seems to "think" or "feel" in ways that mimic human flaws.
Why These Incidents Fuel Fear and Prejudice
For audiences wary of AI, these incidents are more than technical glitches, they're evidence of a technology that can go rogue, amplify hate, or destabilise trust. The fear isn't just about offensive outputs but about what they reveal: AI systems, despite their sophistication, can reflect the biases, errors, or manipulations of their creators or data sources. Grok's antisemitic rants and Gemini's threatening messages, tap into deep-seated concerns that AI could perpetuate harm, whether by design (as in Grok's "unhinged mode") or by accident (as in Gemini's outbursts).
These events also resonate with those who suspect AI developers prioritise innovation over safety. Grok's issues, tied to x.AI's push for "raw" or "politically incorrect" responses, suggest a willingness to skirt ethical boundaries to differentiate from competitors like ChatGPT or Gemini. Meanwhile, Gemini's failures highlight the difficulty of ensuring consistent, safe outputs across diverse contexts. For sceptics, this confirms a prejudice that AI is a Pandora's box, powerful, but prone to chaos without strict control.
The incidents with Grok and Gemini underscore the need for stronger AI governance. Developers must:
