Look, Up in the Sky…It’s Space Junk! By Brian Simpson

    There are over 750,000 hunks of dangerous material orbiting the Earth, coming from 5,250 space launches since 1957. These objects are larger than one cm and there are an estimated 166 million pieces of junk larger than one mm, all of this material traveling faster than a bullet. It is somewhat surprising that more damage has not occurred to modern satellites given that they are essentially in a shooting gallery.

    But don’t worry, the technologists are already fast at work devising ways of dealing with  space junk, including using space crafts that can collect junk and a pulsed electron gun to zap junk:  http://www.space.com/36602-space-junk-cleanup-concepts.html. Technology is a truly wonderful thing, capable of solving all of our problems because humans are super-smart creatures. It is going to be all right – satellites will not  be falling from the sky. Your GPS will continue to work; trust me.

    Then, back on Earth we have garbage avalanches, such as one which recently occurred in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Frankly, I am surprised that the garage pile was only 300 feet high and not 3,000 feet, or even 30,000 feet,  but I guess that Everest is a goal to look forward to, until nanotechnology comes to completely shake up production and use garbage to remake, atom by atom, everything: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engines_of_Creation.

    And speaking of collapsing, how about US president Jared Kushner’s failure to disclose $ 1 billion in loans tied to Goldman Sachs and George Soros?
