Letter to the Editor of The Australian

Your editorial "Crunch time for Brexit deal" (15/1) correctly states that the UK's House of Commons must honour the 2016 referendum decision to leave the EU. Unprovable claims that a majority of the British people would now vote to "Remain" should be ignored. Devious attempts to secure a second referendum or sabotage a "no deal Brexit" should be rejected as dishonest. Scare prophecies of what a "no deal exit" would involve should be resisted as lacking credibility.

Alas, however, the interests of powerful elites threaten to indeed "make a mockery of British democracy". Is it possible that similar interests are behind the gathering push to drastically alter the nature of Australia if the coming elections result in a change of government? In both cases what is most at stake is the individual freedom that George Orwell so wisely warned is at risk from socialist bureaucracy and eventual tyranny.

Nigel Jackson, Belgrave, Vic.
