Letter to The Editor - Public authorities should not allow the 'vandalism' of our historical monuments, motivated by 'anti-colonization sentiment'
To The Age There may be 'a growing push to acknowledge indigenous history' ('Indigenous recognition push', 1/6), but there is also a growing public awareness that indigenous issues are being over-promoted to the detriment of national unity and the principle of equity. Public authorities should not allow the 'vandalism' of our historical monuments, motivated by 'anti-colonization sentiment', to stampede them into undue 'recognition' of indigenous resistance that occurred many generations ago. Such vandalism is neither honourable nor intelligent and should be regarded with contempt.
