The Cost of Turning Away the Unvaccinated By James Reed

With the federal and state governments proclaiming that the unvaccinated will become shunned from the mainstream society, small businesses are considering the significance of this. Can they afford to turn away the unvaccinated? Apparently not. So, they may have to disobey Big Brother or go bankrupt.

“A range of small businesses including hairdressers, restaurants, pubs and other retailers are promoting themselves on social media as wanting to welcome customers who are “jabbed or unjabbed”, once they open.

A pizza outlet’s social media post jokes that it only discriminates against customers who want pineapple topping.

The NSW government’s road map to freedom will allow fully vaccinated people and those with medical exemptions access to hospitality venues and retail stores after NSW hits the 70 per cent double-dose target.

A Facebook site called FairBusiness is promoting businesses and services that say they are “not discriminating or refusing entry based on vaccination status”.

In a post on the site, Amoretti’s Restaurant in Abbotsbury says it doesn’t discriminate. “Only if you ask for pineapple on pizza! ONLY JOKING.”

Amoretti’s are among businesses that have posted welcoming messages to unvaccinated customers on Facebook.

Gabriele Moretti, who runs Amoretti’s, said he would not discriminate against any customers who come through his door.

“I can’t be filtering customers based on their status. There are anti-discrimination laws in place that I’d be breaking if I did that. It’s also bad business, as a business owner you’re essentially ripping yourself off,” he said.

“We can’t afford to turn customers away after we have lost so much revenue already.”

Mate, that is for sure!
