There's something quietly strange about the moment we're in. A pop star's fiancé can spend years in stealth keeping leftover surgical skin alive in a lab, feed what that tissue does into an AI model, and then walk out of stealth with a company that promises better anti-aging molecules. People laughed. Then they got angry. Then they started arguing about venture capital and defence networks. All of that is noise compared with the simpler, more human question underneath: when did discarded pieces of us become training data?
Outer Bio, co-founded by Michael Polansky, with Lady Gaga on the board, does not, on paper, sound like a horror film. The company sources leftover skin from surgery through biobanks, under IRB oversight and documented consent. Donors are de-identified. The tissue would otherwise be thrown away. Their platform, Yuna, keeps full-thickness human skin viable for about four weeks instead of a few days, so researchers can watch the slow stuff: inflammation, collagen, sun damage, the biology of aging that never shows up in a three-day petri dish. An algorithm guesses which untested compounds might help. The living tissue tests the guess. The result goes back into the model. Repeat. That loop is the product. That last sentence is the part that should make you pause.
For twenty years Silicon Valley trained machines on what we typed, clicked, photographed, and watched. When that well started to look finite, the next obvious dataset was the body itself. Not a scan of the body. Not a questionnaire about the body. The tissue. The same organ you live inside becomes a month-long instrument, then a dataset, then a patent, then a cream sold back to people who are terrified of looking like time is happening to them.
None of this requires a cartoon villain. The consent forms can be real. The science can even be useful: better models than mice, fewer dead ends in dermatology, maybe a compound that actually helps psoriasis or photoaging. The unease is not "science is evil." The unease is the direction of travel. Once you accept that leftover human skin is a high-fidelity data engine, the moral line moves. Today it is surgical remnants. Tomorrow it is whatever organ they can keep alive long enough to be "worth training a model on." Polansky has said as much: skin is where the problem is solvable now. It is not where it ends.
The public fight latched onto capital and celebrity because those are easy to hate. Lightspeed is on the cap table; Lightspeed has an Israel office and a cybersecurity book. Gaga posted about "the future of skin health." Fine. Follow the money if you want. But the more intimate scandal is quieter. Someone has a tummy tuck or a facelift. The excess skin leaves the OR. A lab keeps it breathing. A model learns from it. A company owns the insight. The person whose cells made the insight possible gets neither a check nor a name on the paper. That is not a conspiracy. That is how tissue research has often worked. What's new is the scale, the closed AI loop, and the frankness that this is a data-generation engine first.
We already live inside the fear this business needs. Botox at thirty. Fillers at thirty-five. A face that looks expensive and hollow. Then the creams, the clinics, the language of "optimisation." Aging stops being something that happens to a person and becomes a bug report. If the body is just a stack of systems, of course you patch it. If the patch was trained on other people's leftover skin, that is simply vertical integration.
You can hold two thoughts at once. Using discarded tissue under consent is not the same as harvesting people. Animal models are crude. Skin disease is real. Wanting better evidence is not decadent. And still: there is a difference between studying the body and treating the body as raw inventory for a model that will be licensed to a conglomerate and sold, at a markup, to the same culture that produced the fear. The first is medicine. The second is a supply chain that begins in an operating room and ends in a bathroom cabinet.
The boundary that matters is not celebrity versus science. It is whether we still think a person is more than the data their cells can generate. Once that stops feeling obvious, the rest of the pipeline: the patents, the creams, the next organ on the bench, writes itself, and the Frankenstein world follows.
