Hard Core Leftist Feminist Republican Next Governor General! By Paul Walker

Do we laugh or cry? I suggest laughing it off. Albo has announced that Ms Samantha Mostyn AO, a 58-year-old businesswoman and climate change and gender equity advocate will be the next Governor-General of Australia. Oh, and as the Australian Monarchist League notes, she is a republican as well, so she is politically opposed to the role she is being placed in. That makes sense, it is just the sort of thing the Left Albo government would do.

But, in many ways the appointment is disappointing from a woke Left perspective. Surely, they should be going for a trans GG, maybe disabled as well, and certainly not White. Are there any other "special" categories we have forgotten? Maybe, it is hard to keep up with the relentless march of woke.

In any case, it is possible that by being in the role, something may rub off on this republican; stranger things have happened, with a road to Damascus conversion to a monarchist not impossible: Galatians 1:11–16.

Australian Monarchist League email elaborates:

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has just announced that the King has agreed to appoint Ms Samantha Mostyn AO, a 58-year-old businesswoman and climate change and gender equity advocate, as Australia's next Governor-General.

Ms Mostyn had earlier worked as an advisor to Labor Party ministers, including former Prime Minister Paul Keating.

She was prominent in promoting the Voice referendum and is a proponent of changing the date of Australia Day which she has referred to as "Invasion Day." On her, now deleted, social media platform she had written "it was a bloody invasion" (The Australian 3/4/24).

Someone who has so aggressively attacked the heritage of modern Australia should never be allowed to become its executive head of state.

The march through the institutions is almost complete.

This is but one of the media posts indicating what a divisive nomination this is.

She is a republican and it is obvious that her nomination is a part of the Prime Minister's political plan to bring on a republic as has been the appointment of so many republican State Governors. No wonder the Australian Republican Movement has warmly welcomed the nomination with its co-chair, Craig Foster, stating "Sam is someone that I'm sure Australians would choose as Head of State if we had the choice, rather than asking for approval of a King. In fact, Sam would be a wonderful President of an Australian republic" (Mirage News 3/4/24).

It is noted that whereas the media have reported Mr Albanese had indicated that there will be no republic referendum, he, himself, has been very vague on the issue limiting his comments to refer only to this term of his government. He has also retained the taxpayer-funded services of the Assistant Minister for the Republic whose sole purpose in that portfolio appears to be attending gatherings of the Australian Republican Movement such as the one above.

Other than an initial meeting in 2022 to find out about the Australian Monarchist League, the Assistant Minister has not bothered to contact us even though we are the major opponent of a republic in this country.

Some may censure me for pointing out the political activism of the Governor-General designate but in no way do I criticise the office, only the suitability of the person nominated.

For some time the Australian Monarchist League has proposed that the nomination of the Governor-General should be by consensus of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Similarly the appointment of State governors should be by consensus of the premiers and State leaders of the opposition. After this nomination of a socialist activist, perhaps the Liberal and National parties will now take note.

The position of the Australian Monarchist League in relation to the King's viceroys in this country is that we honour and uphold the office but our job is also to hold the incumbents to the high standard expected of them. The King cannot criticise nor can he openly censure, but we can.

Yours sincerely

Philip Benwell
National Chair
