Freedom and Responsibility

Over the last week, political events around the world have highlighted again how vitally important active engagement in the political process is.
Britain has voted for BREXIT, causing the then Prime Minister to resign, but what is more bizarre is that it appears the Murdoch press has been instrumental in influencing the outcome of his replacement, with no vote of the party membership (as per the party constitution), simply a vote by those party representatives in Parliament (super-delegates). This extraordinary power was previously demonstrated, as mentioned in previous articles, when Tony Abbott was replaced by Malcolm Turnbull two weeks after Murdoch described Australia as ungovernable.

The other significant event that has highlighted the fragility of the Republic of Turkey, has been the resignation of the Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu seven weeks ago, the military coup and now the purging of the military and arrest of thousands of judges and prosecutors. This places the president Recep Tayyip Erdogan as absolute ruler. It is not necessary to draw a longbow  to see who benefits from the situation in Turkey.

If we are to avoid similar situations in Australia, we need to make our Constitution and political representatives work for us. This can only be done if we the people play our part in this Constitutional Monarchy. We need to engage.

 I am only one, but I am one and that is a start.   OK, where do I start?

To make a start the first thing is to read and gain some understanding of our history, which includes  such subjects as Common Law, Habeus Corpus, Trial by Jury, Magna Carta, Limited Constitutional Government. You see freedom has come at a great price and we need to protect it or we will lose it.

Can I be free but not reponsible?
Some try to, (the prodical son) but others are left to carry the greater burden.

Freedom is inseparable from responsibility, and from that projects the product of both - integrity.
If responsibility is attained, freedom will be there too.
Politically, in this sense, it may be useful to think of the approach to this problem as being couched in terms of responsibility…

•    The political parties have assumed responsibility for the propounding of policy - then make it so, with the proviso that their proposals (including cost) are put in a form which the electors can understand.                  (propounding - put forward for consideration)

•    Electors are responsible for choosing policy - then make it so, being sure that they understand the proposals put before them and that each (by having his vote recorded - no longer a secret vote) will secure the results of their choice.

We need to look closely at the workings and historical development of our Parliamentary and Legal institutions.

Australia's founding fathers recognised the essential Christian roots of our nation and acknowledged our dependence upon God in the opening paragraph of the Constitution - 

WHEREAS the people of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania, humbly relying on the blessing of Almighty God, have agreed to unite in one indissoluble Federal Commonwealth under the Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and under the Constitution hereby established:

And whereas it is expedient to provide for the admission into the Commonwealth of other Australasian Colonies and possessions of the Queen:

Be it therefore enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

There would be few today who would have been worthy of an invitation to the Constitutional Conventions leading up to Federation in 1901.

Fewer still seem unable to argue the case for Monarchy, the trinitarian concept of government or Common Law.

It follows that since our Government and Laws have developed from the Christian revelation, (philosophy or religion) it is inevitable that a change of philosophy (or religion) by those who govern us will flow through to the laws and institutions of Government. We see this happening in countries that allow Islamic influence into their Parliaments and so Sharia Law follows.

In the following article, written quite a number of years ago, Hewlett Edwards takes us back into British history where the direction of the British peoples was dramatically altered and the foundational Constitutional concepts were being lost. This 'line of action' clearly impinges on the restoration of the Constitution - the incarnation of the Talent which is the especial endowment of the British (Australian) people.”
