Feminism on Steroids: The Woke Anger of Liberal White Women
They were told that anger is a virtue, and a large slice of the American professional class believed it. Steve McCann's question in American Thinker (link below), is not subtle, and it does not need to be. Why are so many liberal white women so publicly furious when, by the metrics the last half-century used to measure female progress, they have already won? They outnumber men on campus, they dominate the helping professions that set the tone of institutions, they control fertility, they are not drafted, and they live longer with lower rates of the old male vices. The street theatre persists anyway, because the street theatre was never a campaign with a finish line. It became a way of being a person. Protest stopped being a tool and turned into a lifestyle, then into an identity, then into the only approved source of meaning once church, marriage and neighbourhood had been filed under oppression.
Comfort is what makes the performance affordable. You do not find many women working two shifts and raising children alone spending Saturday afternoon screaming at a line of police. You find women with degrees, benefits, flexible hours and enough slack in the week to treat politics as a second career. Material need has already been met; status need has not. Outrage from that position is slacktivism with better lighting. The costs are low enough that the theatrics can be high, and the audience, colleagues, group chats, the timeline, rewards volume more than results. A hobby can masquerade as heroism when nobody in the room will lose the house if the march fails.
The grievance loop is the engine. The doctrine says that anger at perceived injustice is not merely permitted but the path to a meaningful life. Once that is believed, the supply of villains has to be restocked. Patriarchy, white supremacy, the criminal courts, "Zion," the wrong joke, the wrong hiring committee: each new target postpones the moment when the crusade would have to admit it had either won or was never going to. Victory would be a kind of death. The original villain, the white man as structural fact, cannot be allowed to retire, and new "rights" have to be minted so the liturgy has fresh sacraments. Tilting at windmills is not a failure of the quest. The tilting is the quest.
The mental-health numbers sit next to that story and will not leave. In a March 2020 Pew survey that Zach Goldberg pulled apart, 56 percent of white liberal women aged 18 to 29 said a doctor had diagnosed them with a mental-health condition, against roughly 28 percent of young moderate women and 27 percent of young conservative women. Later work keeps finding the same weather. The 2024 American Family Survey had young conservative women three times as likely as young liberal women to say they were completely satisfied with life. Liberal women in that range also report more loneliness. Diagnosis is not the same as disease: liberals seek care more readily, speak the language of therapy more fluently, and live in institutions that medicalise distress. That caveat matters. It does not erase a gap that large, or the fact that liberal adolescent girls have been pulling away from their conservative peers on depression for years. Something in the worldview is either selecting for fragile people or teaching sturdy people to interpret ordinary friction as injury. Both can be true at once.
The double bind is almost designed to produce that fracture. As women they are told they are victims of an ancient male order. As white people they are told they are beneficiaries of theft. The psyche is asked to be exploited and exploiter in the same breath. Guilt, apology and rage are the available exits. Happiness looks like desertion. Contentment looks like "not doing the work." So the performance continues even when the performer is, by any historical standard, safe. The anger is not a thermometer of oppression. It is a product. The market that sold it cannot declare a surplus.
Naomi Wolf's cruder version, that these women go unmoored without strong, sane men as ballast, is half a metaphor and half a demographic observation. The same decades that professionalised female ambition also treated ordinary masculinity as a pathology and treated marriage as optional furniture. Complementary roles that once absorbed some of the volatility of early adulthood were dismantled in the name of liberation, after which the resulting list to port was described as evidence that the remaining men were still the problem. You do not have to accept Wolf's hormone talk to notice that unmarried, irreligious, institutionally unattached young women are the ones lighting up the unhappiness tables, and that those are the same women most saturated in the grievance curriculum. The Left spent a generation telling them that attachment was a trap. It should not be shocked when unattached people feel unmoored.
None of this requires pretending that no injustice remains, or that every conservative woman is a portrait of calm. It requires noticing that an ideology which treats anger as the proof of moral seriousness will produce angry people, and that people with spare time and status anxiety will be first in line to buy it. They perform rage they only partly feel, about causes they only partly understand, from positions of safety they are not allowed to name. The alternative would be to admit that the crusade was, for many of them, a substitute religion that failed to save. Religions that cannot offer peace eventually offer only louder services. The anger stays on because turning it off would mean walking out of the only church they still attend.
