For one week in January, Facebook's data scientists, led by Adam Kramer, secretly manipulated the emotions of 689,003 users by tweaking their newsfeeds, some got a deluge of negative posts, others a flood of positive ones, all without a whisper of consent. The goal? To prove they could weaponise social media for "mass emotional contagion at scale." The results were chilling: negative feeds bred negative posts, positive feeds sparked upbeat ones. Users were pawns, their moods toyed with like lab rats, and some, like one who landed in the ER threatening suicide, may have been pushed to the edge. Lemov laid it bare: in January 2012, Facebook's data team ran a covert experiment on 689,003 users, altering their newsfeeds to test emotional manipulation. One group's feed was stripped of positive posts, plunging them into a curated gloom; another lost negative posts, force-fed a saccharine high. A control group stayed untouched. The method was cold: word-counting software measured emotional tone, and algorithms reshaped what users saw. The findings, published in a 2014 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences paper by Kramer et al., were stark: "When positive expressions were reduced, people produced fewer positive posts and more negative posts; when negative expressions were reduced, the opposite pattern occurred." Emotions were contagious, and Facebook could pull the strings. No user was warned. No consent was sought. For a week, nearly 700,000 people were guinea pigs in a psychological game they didn't know they were playing.

The experiment's ethics are a dumpster fire. First, there was no informed consent, a cornerstone of ethical research since the 1947 Nuremberg Code. Users "agreed" to A/B testing in Facebook's fine print, but nobody was told their emotions were being manipulated. Lemov highlighted a gut-punch: one user, in 2014, begged Kramer's team to know if their feed was altered, citing a January 2012 ER visit for suicidal thoughts. "Could that have pushed me over?" they asked. No answer, Facebook couldn't (or wouldn't) trace participants. This wasn't abstract harm; real people suffered, their mental health potentially shattered by a corporate whim. The New York Times (June 2014) reported widespread outrage, with psychologists slamming the study for violating American Psychological Association guidelines requiring clear consent and risk minimisation.

Second, the experiment targeted vulnerable users indiscriminately. Unlike medical trials, which screen for at-risk groups, Facebook's dragnet included teens, the depressed, anyone scrolling in January 2012. A 2014 Slate piece noted that negative feed tweaks could exacerbate mental health crises, especially in users with pre-existing conditions. The lack of debriefing, standard in psych studies to mitigate harm, left users to stew in manipulated moods.

Was it illegal? The case is strong. In the U.S., human-subjects research is governed by the Code of Federal Regulations (45 CFR 46), requiring informed consent and Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for studies posing more than "minimal risk." Facebook claimed its internal review sufficed, but a 2014 Forbes analysis argued the experiment's psychological risks, potentially triggering depression or suicide, demanded external IRB oversight. No such board was involved. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) could've pursued charges under Section 5 for deceptive practices, as users weren't told their feeds were experimental. A 2014 Wired report noted FTC scrutiny but no action, Big Tech's get-out-of-jail-free card.

Internationally, the experiment sparked fury. Lemov told Rogan the British government probed possible sanctions, as UK users were swept up without consent, potentially breaching the UK's Data Protection Act 1998, which mandates clear data-use disclosure. No fines landed, but the EU's 2018 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), if in effect, could've slapped Facebook with billions in penalties for non-consensual data processing. The lack of prosecution doesn't clear Facebook, it exposes a legal system rigged for tech titans.

This experiment wasn't a one-off; it's a blueprint for elite control. The EU's Digital Services Act, fining platforms billions for "disinformation," mirrors this, as JD Vance warned. Facebook's 2012 stunt fits the pattern: manipulate minds, test limits, dodge consequences. The elite learned they can toy with people's minds and walk free.
