Diversity Delivered: A Third of Britons Think Sharia Dominates
King's College London and YouGov asked a simple question and got an unfashionable answer. Thirty-four per cent of Britons believe there are parts of London where Sharia dominates and non-Muslims stay out. Thirty-six per cent say that is false. Nineteen per cent will not pick. The median guess for London's Muslim share is 35 per cent. The last census said 15. People who think the city is 70 per cent Muslim or more are almost twice as likely to believe in Sharia enclaves. That is not a Reform mailer. It is the university's own "misperceptions" study.
The official reply is the second half of the enrichment package: there is nothing to see, London is "extremely safe," and if you think otherwise Donald Trump put it in your head. The fieldwork was March. The latest Trump clip was September. Six months of polling is not a Tuesday interview. Khan's version is a "dark blizzard of disinformation," foreign bots, MAGA, AI slop, and a proposed state unit to police talk about his city. When a third of the public and the mayor cannot occupy the same map, the slogan is doing more work than the street.
"No-go" in ordinary English is not a UN border. It is a place where the unwritten rules change: dress, alcohol, street preaching, who gets policed first, which jokes get you a visit. Grooming-gang inquiries, two-tier crowd control, and neighbourhoods where Christmas lights come down faster than a flag of another country are not AI. They are why a third of the country reaches for a word the seminar class banned.
KCL is not wrong that people inflate crime risk and inflate the Muslim share. Humans inflate what they fear. Fear is not a peer-reviewed paper. It is a running tally of nights, headlines, and what the council will not say. The enrichment pitch promised food and festivals. It did not promise that a third of the electorate would start talking like a forbidden pamphlet.
Diversity-as-strength was never a finding. It was a moral instruction. You were not allowed to ask which diversity, at what scale, with what reciprocity. Import a large cohort from non-Western societies, concentrate it in a few postcodes, and then act shocked when the receiving country develops a folk sociology. That folk sociology overshoots. Official sociology undershoots on purpose.
The further enrichment is the management layer. First you get the demographic change. Then you get the parallel institutions: councils for divorce that English law will not perform the same way. Then you get the mayoral presser that the problem is speech about London. Then you get Whitehall floating rules to boost BBC and Channel 4 in the feed so the public can "discover trusted news." Farage called that state censorship. YouTube's Europe man said it would privilege a government-picked handful of outlets. The diagnosis is always the same: the patient is looking at the wrong screen.
If London were merely "misperceived," the cure would be better numbers on a slide. The cure on offer is prominence for approved media and a disinformation unit. That is how you enrich a country with a second official reality.
Two maps:Map one: census 15 per cent Muslim, crime victimisation lower than the public guesses, no legal no-go zone, most Muslims wanting integration.
Map two: a third of the country believes Sharia streets exist, the public doubles the Muslim share, Trump says the culture changed, Khan says the culture is fine and the feed is dirty.
Both maps can contain facts. Only one is allowed on the mayor's letterhead. The gap between them is the policy. You cannot run a capital on "extremely safe" while a third of the nation thinks there are doors they should not open.
The enrichment that was advertised was restaurants and a skyline. The enrichment that arrived includes a polling result the commissioning university filed under wrong. A country that needs a report titled "London has fallen?" to tell the public they are mistaken has already accepted the premise of the title. The only dispute left is who gets to define the fall.
England wasn't enriched. England was managed.
