“We have now received the following information from the office of the Minister for Indigenous Affairs the Hon Ken Wyatt MP:-

 

  • There were an estimated 798,400 Indigenous people in Australia in 2016 (ABS, 2016).
  • The Productivity Commission estimates expenditure on programs, services and payments for Indigenous Australians was around $33.4 billion in 2015-16. Australian Government expenditure accounted for around $14.7 billion of total Indigenous expenditure.
  • The Indigenous Expenditure Report was set up to measure all Government expenditure on ‘Indigenous people’ – including for example spending on defence and industry support based on the percentage of the population Indigenous Australians represent.
  • As at 25 January 2021, native title has been determined to exist over more than 40 per cent of Australia and 13.7 per cent of land is exclusive native title.
