As regards the Uluru Statement, the "broad political consensus" that Ben Wyatt rightly says is necessary for change ("Uluru Statement is not just the right way, it is inevitable', 12-13/2) is unlikely to endorse his one-sided views. Acceptance of the divisive proposals of the Statement is unlikely to occur on a wide basis because they are clearly against the interests of most other Australians.

At a time of increasing international insecurity, we need unity of purpose on this continent. That unity can only be obtained if a future-based approach is taken up, not one centered on the past - or what some allege is the past. Individual ethnicity is important and worthy of respect; but, constitutionally, our shared Australianness is more important.
