A Proposal by Academics to Classify Happiness as a Psychiatric Disorder! What!? By James Reed
I have even more grave doubts about the discipline of psychiatry than I have about psychology. Thus, I note the controversial idea of classifying happiness as a psychiatric disorder, made originally in a 1992 article by Richard P Bentall, Journal of Medical Ethics. While this seems absurd, there is a case made from the psychiatric "bible," the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) definition:
"A mental disorder is a syndrome characterized by clinically significant disturbance in an individual's cognition, emotion regulation, or behavior that reflects a dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental functioning."
That is certainly broad.
My question now is that if we run with this, why not by the same definition take Leftism as also a psychiatric disorder? And applied self-referentially, psychiatry itself, an obsessive affair if here is one, would also be psychologically dysfunctional as well!

"It is proposed that happiness be classified as a psychiatric disorder and be included in future editions of the major diagnostic manuals under the new name: major affective disorder, pleasant type. In a review of the relevant literature it is shown that happiness is statistically abnormal, consists of a discrete cluster of symptoms, is associated with a range of cognitive abnormalities, and probably reflects the abnormal functioning of the central nervous system. One possible objection to this proposal remains - that happiness is not negatively valued. However, this objection is dismissed as scientifically irrelevant.'
