A Daily Glass of Milk and the Quiet Protection Against Diabetes and High Blood Pressure

In a large prospective study of middle-aged and older Chinese adults living in Singapore, regular consumption of milk and other dairy foods emerged as modestly but consistently linked to lower risks of two major chronic conditions: type 2 diabetes and hypertension. The findings come from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, a long-running cohort that began recruiting participants between 1993 and 1998. Researchers followed tens of thousands of men and women, collecting detailed dietary information through validated food-frequency questionnaires and then tracking physician-diagnosed health outcomes over subsequent years through repeated interviews.

One analysis focused on hypertension and included 37,124 participants who were free of cancer, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease at baseline. These adults, aged 45 to 74 at enrolment, were observed for an average of more than a decade. Milk accounted for roughly 80 percent of all dairy products consumed in this population, where overall dairy intake tends to be lower than in many Western cohorts. Those who reported drinking milk daily showed a 6 percent lower risk of developing hypertension compared with nondrinkers, after adjustment for a range of lifestyle and dietary factors. Looking at total dairy intake, a clear inverse dose-response pattern appeared: participants in the highest quartile of dairy consumption had a statistically significant reduction in hypertension risk relative to those in the lowest quartile.

A parallel examination of type 2 diabetes in the broader cohort of more than 63,000 Chinese adults produced similar results. During roughly 12 years of follow-up, daily milk drinkers experienced a 12 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who did not drink milk. Higher overall dairy intake was likewise associated with reduced diabetes risk in a graded fashion. When researchers examined calcium specifically, dairy-derived calcium tracked with lower risk for both conditions, while calcium from nondairy sources showed no comparable association. This pattern suggested that the observed benefits might not be attributable solely to calcium content.

Media reports summarising the work described the practical quantities involved with some precision. Adults who consumed about 240 millilitres of milk per day, the volume of a typical glass, showed the 12 percent lower diabetes risk and 6 percent lower hypertension risk relative to nonconsumers. Those whose total dairy intake reached a median of roughly 252 grams per day (encompassing milk along with items such as cultured milk drinks, yogurt, and other products) experienced approximately 7 to 11 percent lower hypertension risk and around 10 percent lower diabetes risk, depending on the exact comparison presented.

These are observational associations derived from self-reported diet and subsequent health diagnoses, not randomised trials that can prove causation. Residual confounding by unmeasured lifestyle factors remains possible, and the study population's relatively low baseline dairy consumption means the absolute intakes examined were modest by some international standards. The researchers themselves noted that the findings align with results from other populations and that the potential benefits appear applicable beyond the Chinese Singaporean group studied. Milk type (whole versus lower-fat) was not differentiated in the primary analyses, leaving open questions about whether fat content modifies the relationships.

Still, the consistency across two major cardiometabolic outcomes, the dose-response patterns, and the specificity to dairy rather than nondairy calcium lend weight to the observations. In a region where lactose intolerance and cultural dietary patterns have historically limited dairy consumption, the data offer a quiet counterpoint: a simple, everyday food long viewed as optional may, for many adults, contribute to lower long-term risks of conditions that impose substantial individual and public-health burdens. The Singapore Chinese Health Study does not claim milk is a panacea, but it does place a measured glass of it among the dietary factors associated with better metabolic and vascular health over a decade and more of observation.
