Time for Some Fair Dinkum Economic Policies. By Ken Grundy

Dear Editor

Anthony Keane reports in “Crowded House” (Advertiser June 17) that high levels of immigration “may help Australia avoid a recession despite interest rate rises, shrinking retail sales and plunging consumer confidence.”

If this is the means to save our economy, we are sorely in need of some new economists.

To advocate bringing more people to make our economy work is a sad admission of failure.  What if the rest of the world sank beneath the sea?  Would we not be able to work out a scheme where all could benefit from being in the midst of ‘plenty’?

If population numbers indicate affluence or success, we need look no further than India and some south-east Asian countries.

I am staying here hoping for some fair dinkum economic policies.

Yours etc
