It is a state that can no longer lean on its neighbour when the wind drops and the coal plant that used to sit under the frequency is already closed or coughing.

Someone with a generator becomes a temporary duke. Cash, if any is left in a drawer, outperforms the tap-and-go religion. Radios beat phones once the towers' batteries die. Councils that kept a depot of pumps and a relationship with the SES look like geniuses. Councils that outsourced the lot to a dashboard look like the dashboard.
The official answer will be the same sentence Americans heard after Metcalf: you cannot guard everything, so we will write a standard and ask the utilities to assess their own crown jewels. Some fences will get taller. Some cameras will multiply. Some spare transformers may even be ordered before the crisis instead of after. EnergyConnect and HumeLink and the battery boom are, in one light, the adult response, more paths, more storage, more houses that can island for a day. In another light they are more surface to hit and more software to poison.
The American 18-month figure is a scare with a serial number. It is also a reminder that electricity is not an app. Australia's grid is smaller, more solar-soaked, more fire-prone, more dependent on a few interconnectors, and already being probed by people who do not live here. A nationwide blackout in the US sense is harder here because there is no single nation-sized wire. A state-sized blackout that lasts until a transformer arrives from the other hemisphere is not harder. It is the ordinary risk of a long, thin country that bet its evenings on a handful of substations and a ship that has not left the dock. The farmhouse with a battery will sulk and cope. The city that cannot pump sewage will learn, in one week, what "the first seven percent" was trying to say.
