Here is an article from the conservative think tank, the Institute of Public Affairs, commenting upon the latest Australian Bureau of Statistic data, indicating that that the federal government has already exceeded its immigration target for the financial year. "The net migration intake from July 2023 to May 2024 was 445,510, well ahead of the total FY24 level the federal government committed in the budget in May of 395,000, with a month's data still to be released.
Year to date net permanent and long-term arrivals between January and May 2024 was the highest on record at 242,750. This exceeded the previous record (set in 2023), which was 208,090, by 17 per cent.
The May 2024 monthly net intake was the second highest May on record at 25,940, behind May 2023, when net intake was 31,310.
This calendar year, on average, 1,607 migrants have arrived in Australia each and every day. This is more than one new net new arrival every minute."
According to Dr Kevin You, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Public Affairs: "The Prime Minister's commitment to halve the annual migration intake, made just two months ago, is not worth the paper it is written on, and is yet another broken promise from a government which is making it harder for mainstream Australians to get ahead."
"The latest data reinforces that Australia's migration program is being run in the interests of big business and universities bureaucracy, not the Australian people."
"The record surge to migration is taking place at the same time as housing and rental prices are at record highs and housing construction is at 1980s levels. Australians are suffering through cost-of-living crisis brought on by unplanned mass migration."

Previous IPA research has found that Australia's increased reliance on migration meant that Australians in 2023 were approximately $7,848 poorer on a per capita basis.
"Never before has GDP per capita declined for more than a year, now totalling five quarters. Today, Australians are, on an individual basis, in recession and getting left further behind when the nation's cost of living crisis is already acute," said Dr You.
"Australia's dismal economic conditions reflect the federal government's lack of vision and ambition for the nation. Its only trick for growing the economy seems to be by increasing migration alone."
"Migration has and will continue to play a critical role in Australia's story. However, the current unplanned, record migration intake is placing immense pressure on housing costs and our infrastructure, has not solved our worker shortage crisis and has left Australians worse off," said Dr You.
"Australia's capital cities are fast becoming unliveable due to years of record, unplanned mass-migration, which is placing immense pressure on social services, and causing congestion on our roads and public transport, with no plan for how this will be fixed," said Dr Kevin You, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Public Affairs.
Today, the IPA released new research that shows where new arrivals are settling, by analysing Australian Bureau of Statistics net overseas migration (NOM) data at the Statistical Area 3 (SA3) level for the 2022 and 2023 financial years. The research reveals:
83 per cent of all new migrants settled in a capital city metropolitan area.
77 per cent of all new migrants settled in either Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth.
57 per cent of all new migrants settled in Sydney or Melbourne.
The top 10 ABS SA3 areas for NOM intake for FY22 and FY23 combined are in greater Melbourne and greater Sydney.
"Since the election of the federal government, ABS data shows Australia has seen a record migration intake of 1.15 million, and our cities are straining under the pressure, with of 8 out of 10 new arrivals settling in a metropolitan area," said Dr You.
"Home ownership is a fundamental component of the Australian way of life, yet governments are not serious about ensuring that all Australians have access to affordable housing."
"The latest ABS data shows the federal government is already an astonishing 25 per cent behind its first monthly goal on the number of dwellings required to meet its 2029 target. We are simply not building enough homes for first home buyers and new arrivals alike."
"Migration has played a critical role in our nation's history, but this government is running the single largest mass migration program without a plan to house new arrivals. It is setting Australia up for an economic and social disaster," said Dr You.
Previous research by the IPA revealed the Australian economy has undergone a fundamental shift from sustainable, productivity-led growth to population-led growth. Throughout the 1990s, population growth only accounted for one third of total economic growth. In 2023, population growth accounted for 85 per cent of total economic growth.
"Our current migration intake is making Australians poorer because, while the overall size of the economic pie may be growing, Australians are getting an ever-smaller slice, with six consecutive quarters of negative per capita economic growth – the worst result on record," said Dr You.
"Every day, mainstream Australians are feeling the hip pocket pain caused by the federal government's lazy, migration-driven growth agenda. Australians, on an individual level, are in recession at the same time they are facing a cost-of-living and inflation crisis."
