Far-Right and Left-wing lawmakers joined forces to back a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his government, with a majority of votes bringing the government down. Some French journalists wrote that they woke up, fired up the laptop only to find that they had no government at that point, at least technically. Marine Le Pen had said collapsing the government was "the only way the constitution gives us to protect the French from a dangerous, unfair and punitive budget." While the French constitution allows some emergency measures to keep things ticking over, there is still chaos at present. French President Emmanuel Macron has said he will name a new prime minister "in the coming days." But as I understand it, the problem is with details of the budget which has united both the Left and the Right, and there is no guarantee that the next prime minister will not get toppled as well. Unstable place, France.
