On George Monbiot and “Petro-Masculinity”

George Monbiot has seen some terrible driving. Street racers in the West Midlands doing 90 in a 30. Convoys in mid-Wales that woke his infant daughter. Lifted pickups in Devon that "roll coal" at cyclists. Soft sentences. Police who want a number plate and a form. SUVs with bonnets that hide children. None of that requires a new branch of gender studies. He gives you one anyway: petro-masculinity: "a violent, misogynistic, climate-denying version of manhood," the "Magafication of transport," complete with Stop the Boats stickers and a Chelsea "urban 4x4" sneered at as a "Wankpanzer Childkiller," whatever that means.

That last phrase is the genre in one word. A real nuisance is not enough. It must be a politics of manhood and the pump, anti-manhood plus climate change alarmism.

Reckless driving is antisocial. Organised racing that kills bystanders is a crime problem. Rolling coal is not vandalism with an exhaust; it is daily life. If magistrates hand out parking-fine energy for 90 mph in a built-up street, that is a failure of enforcement, not a failure of queer theory. Heavier, taller vehicles do worse damage in a collision with a pedestrian. Those are engineering and policing facts. You can want them enforced without a glossary.

Monbiot's own anecdotes almost admit this. The Welsh police did not refuse to act because they were captured by fossil patriarchy. They wanted proof of speed. The Midland racers did not need MAGA. Britain had boy-racer culture when the closest American import was The Dukes of Hazzard. Young men showing off in loud cars is not a 2026 innovation. It is a statistical cliché older than the catalytic converter.

"Petro-masculinity" is Cara Daggett's 2018 coinage: fossil fuels plus climate denial plus "authoritarian white patriarchal masculinity." Once you own that phrase, every diesel and every SUV becomes a text. The driver is not late, or rural, or buying the vehicle the market actually stocks. He is performing gender and empire. A sticker on a tailgate is the decoding key. An EV driven badly by a woman, as one reader noted in the wild, does not compute. The theory needs the fuel and the Y chromosome in the same cab.

That is why 52 percent of new UK cars being SUVs has to be "the extreme end of a much wider trend" rather than what it also is: families, dealers, crash-test marketing, and the death of the estate car. A high bonnet is a visibility problem. It is not a confession that the buyer hates Greta. Conflating a Qashqai on the school run with a coal-rolling pickup is how you get a column and lose the council.

"MAGAfication" does the same job for imports. If a Devon farmer's truck carries a slogan Monbiot dislikes, the truck is now an American ideology on wheels. Britain's own habits: boy racers, modified exhausts, contempt for 20 mph zones, predate Trump and will outlast him. Attaching them to a US culture war is a way for the scribbling class to feel they are writing about fascism when they are writing about noise.

It does three favours at once. It moralises taste. People who need a boot, a tow hitch, or a vehicle that survives a B-road become suspects. People who prefer a low hatchback become the grown-ups. It gendered a safety argument so that disagreement sounds like misogyny. Challenge the word and you are defending the racers.

It saves the writer from the boring remedies: cameras that work, bans that stick, seizure of vehicles used in racing, actual prosecution of illegal smoke kits, design rules on bonnet height. Those are dull and local. Petro-masculinity is global and psychic. It belongs in the same drawer as the rest of the woke stationery: find a material (oil, paint, meat), attach a gender, declare a structure.

Street racing should be crushed. SUV geometry is a legitimate crash topic. None of that is a theory of manhood. It is traffic law. The moment the column needs LGBTQ+ cultural Marxists in parentheses to explain a loud exhaust in Wales, you are no longer arguing about roads. You are arguing about the author's need for social control. For Australia just change the cities and the same applies.
