"I don't let little Johnny play with pit bulls. I know, I know, 'not all pits." Yeah, and I'm sure that's what everyone in the neighbourhood said about that one house. Look, pit bulls are sweet. Ninety percent of them, truly lovely dogs, welcome additions to our diverse culture. It's just — every single time you hear about someone's face being rearranged at a dog park, it's a pit. Every attack, every mauling, knifing, every headline. You never read "Labrador tears off toddler's arm." You know what you never hear? "Actually, the golden retriever started it." These dogs were bred to fight. Generations of it. And we're supposed to believe one generation of belly rubs just... rewired them? That they're suddenly "domesticated"? Westernised? Tell that to the kid at the dog park.
But no, mention any of this and some progressive white liberal woman in a pashmina will tell YOU that YOU'RE the problem. That the pit was just "misunderstood." A victim of dog racism. That it's not the breed, it's the owner. You. Ok. Then why don't we put them all in one park together, with the liberals, and see how "the owner" theory holds up? ...You know, I'm not just talking about dogs.
Apologies to Arynne Wexler.
