Making Satire Illegal? By Charles Taylor (Florida)

A hilarious deep fake parody of Kamala Harris has appeared, which was shared by Elon Musk. This led to the California governor Gavin Newsom writing that he will sign a bill "in a matter of weeks" that would ban "manipulating a voice" in fake campaign ads. To this Musk went full satire: "I checked with renowned world authority, Professor Suggon Deeznutz, and he said parody is legal in America [man shrugging emoji]." The deep fake had Harris saying: "I was selected because I am the ultimate diversity hire.""I'm both a woman and a person of color, so if you criticize anything I say, you're both sexist and racist."

And it is all true. And hilarious as well. But is it legal? Musk appears to be correct on this: https://www.freedomforum.org/deepfakes-protected-by-first-amendment/. The US Supreme court is thus likely to strike down Newsom's law.
