 The recent developments in artificial intelligence and neurotechnology, such as brain decoders capable of reading a person's thoughts through brain scans, may seem like impressive feats of scientific progress, something out of a sci fi movie. However, these technologies raise serious concerns about privacy, autonomy, and the potential dangers of an overreliance on AI-driven interventions in our most intimate mental processes.

At first glance, the idea of decoding human thoughts to assist people with disabilities, such as those unable to speak due to strokes or paralysis, may sound like a positive breakthrough. But beneath the surface, this technology reflects a troubling shift toward excessive technological intervention in human cognition. The so-called "brain decoders" and AI systems that interpret brain activity, are only the tip of the iceberg, leading us down a path where our thoughts and inner experiences are no longer private, but open to technological manipulation and monitoring.

This technology, while promoted as a tool for human welfare, threatens the very foundation of individual autonomy. The ability to read a person's thoughts through brain scans and AI systems could be exploited in ways we can't yet fully imagine. It could lead to a future where privacy no longer exists—not just in the traditional sense of surveillance, but at the deepest level of personal thought. Who owns this data? How can we trust these systems not to be used for corporate or governmental surveillance? The implications of allowing AI to decipher our most private experiences are profound. What happens when our thoughts, memories, and emotions are commodified for profit or controlled by those with power? We become something worse than slaves, essentially non-persons.

Moreover, these technologies are being developed and refined with little regard for the unintended consequences they might create. While the potential benefits for certain individuals with disabilities are acknowledged, they also mask the deeper ethical concerns about technology's role in our lives. Once we open the door to AI's control over our mental landscape, there is no telling where it might lead. Is the world really better off if we hand over our most private thoughts to a machine, which could be hacked, misused, or programmed with biases? No, I say.

The rise of such technology also raises questions about our societal dependence on AI to "fix" everything. Rather than creating solutions that respect human dignity and autonomy, we are plunging deeper into a world where our identities are reduced to data points and our minds are no longer our own. We are already seeing the dehumanising consequences of overreliance on machines in everyday life—whether it's AI-driven job automation, social media algorithms dictating our choices, or the erosion of personal connections in favour of virtual interactions.

If we continue down this path, we risk losing our most basic sense of selfhood. Our thoughts, once free and private, could become subject to the whims of technology—manipulated, interpreted, and potentially exploited by corporations or governments. In the worst case, this technology could become another tool of control, further eroding personal freedom and pushing us toward a dystopian future where we are at the mercy of machines.

The promise of "mind-reading" machines should be met with scepticism, not awe. Before embracing such technology, we need to seriously question whether the cost of our humanity is worth the convenience it promises. Instead of welcoming the encroachment of machines into our most sacred space—our minds—perhaps we should consider whether the technological future we are building is one we truly want to live in.

"Scientists have made new improvements to a "brain decoder" that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to convert thoughts into text.

Their new converter algorithm can quickly train an existing decoder on another person's brain, the team reported in a new study. The findings could one day support people with aphasia, a brain disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate, the scientists said.

"This study suggests that there's some semantic representation which does not care from which modality it comes," Yukiyasu Kamitani, a computational neuroscientist at Kyoto University who was not involved in the study, told Live Science. In other words, it helps reveal how the brain represents certain concepts in the same way, even when they're presented in different formats.,

The team's next steps are to test the converter on participants with aphasia and "build an interface that would help them generate language that they want to generate," Huth said."
