In many parts of the world, knife crimes are on the increase. There have been many disturbing attacks, but one attack which was particularly distressful was on a woman in Brooklyn, New York, who had her throat cut by a stranger while she was walking on the street in broad daylight:

Most people operate in “condition white,” as Jeff Cooper described it, unaware of their environment. Thus, they become prey. What is needed is not to be on constant red alert, but to be in a condition of relaxed awareness, aware of one’s environment. It is what is called in psychology, “mindfulness”:
