China’s Youth Unemployment Surges, By James Reed

Youth unemployment is China has now reached 18.8 percent in August 2024, which for 16-24 year olds, was 17.1 percent in July 2024. Figures had been 21.3 percent, but this was too painful to the CCP, so the methodology was changed to exclude students and bring the figure down. There are almost 12 million students who graduated from Chinese universities in June who are struggling to find jobs in a market of ultra-fierce competition.

I situations like this, if the economic plight worsens, war always has been the option to deal with plenty of cannon fodder. But will Chinese youth, brought up in a different culture to that of Maoist China, revolt? Hopefully, yes.
