Will America be Destroyed by a Mega-Tsunami of Biblical Proportions? By Brian Simpson

     I am the science guy of sorts at this site, so I don’t go into apocalyptic collapse or religious end times scenarios, unless the evidence suggests it. But, with all those volcanoes across the world suddenly going off their “noodle,” it makes one stop and ponder, hmmm… volcanic apocalypse … maybe. Guatemala’s “volcano of fire’ has obliterated entire towns, and it make one wonder what would happen if one of these geological pus boils decided to pop up in, or near a major Western  city:

     Then there are thoughts that that Yellowstone may be getting ready to blow, which will devastate America like nothing ever seen:

“Yellowstone caldera eruption fears have spiked as the super volcano’s largest geyser erupted for the eight time.  So far, scientists aren’t certain why the Steamboat geyser continues to erupt, adding to the fears.
After years of silence, Yellowstone’s Steamboat geyser, a better show than Old Faithful, has spewed boiling water hundreds of feet in the air eight times since March.  Steamboat, the tallest geyser in the vast Yellowstone National Park, isn’t reliable at all, unlike the more famous Old Faithful that belches steam with regularity. But the fact is, Steamboat has been more faithful, at least lately, spewing eight times since March 14, after being silent for nearly four years. But that regularity is terrifying and puzzling scientists. Until this recent series of eruptions, the last time Steamboat blew was in September 2014. Steamboat’s latest eruption was Monday morning when the geyser shot boiling hot water hundreds of feet into the air. Steam billowed from the geyser for hours longer. Steamboat is located in the Norris Geyser Basin, known to have the hottest and most changeable thermal area in nearly 3,500-square-mile wilderness park that sits on a volcanic hot spot called a caldera. That accounts for the geyser’s towering columns of steam (it’s very, very hot underground) but leaves a major fear-provoking question unanswered: Why now, and is it a sign the giant volcano is waking up?”

      Beyond all of that, the following coming-disaster   story that I am about to tell,  checks out.  I recall reading an early news story about that giant slab of rock that is getting ready to slide into the sea in the Cumbre Vieja volcano in the Canary Islands. We are looking at 500 cubic metres of rock that will create waves estimated to be between 700 to 900 metres. Places like Florida are likely to be devastated:

“According to research done, which focuses on the Cumbre Vieja volcano in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, the volcano is nearing a collapse.  It continues to weaken, and at some point, it’s instability will see a chunk of the land mass still barely clinging on fall into the Atlantic Ocean.  The displacement of water would cause a devastating mega-tsunami to all but demolish the heavily populated East Coast of the United States. According to the Abstract of the research done by Steven N. Ward with the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Simon Day, with Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre, Department of Geological Sciences, University College, London, geological evidence suggests that during a future eruption, Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma may experience a catastrophic failure of its west flank. This would cause the dropping of 150 to 500 cubic kilometers of rock into the sea. Using a geologically reasonable estimate of landslide motion, the researchers model tsunami waves produced by such a collapse. Waves generated by the run-out of a 500 km3 (150 km3) slide block at 100 m/s could transit the entire Atlantic Basin and arrive on the coasts of the Americas with 10-25 m (3-8 m) height.”

     Here is the conclusion from the leading scientific paper dealing with this, “Cumbre Vieja Volcano – Potential Collapse and Tsunami at La Palma, Canary Islands,” by S. N. Ward and S. Day:

“Geological evidence suggests that during a future eruption, Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma may experience a catastrophic flank collapse. For a 500 km slide block running westward 60 km down the offshore slope at 100 m/s, our computer models predict that tsunami waves 10 to 25 m high will be felt at transoceanic distances spanning azimuths that target most of the Atlantic basin. Simulations of other collapse scenarios indicate that for slides that do not run too close to the tsunami wave speed, peak tsunami amplitude follows roughly in proportion to landslide volume times peak landslide velocity. (The Proportionality is location- dependent, and it holds more strictly forvolume and less strictly for peak velocity.) Thus, more modest assumptions on the size and peak speed of the slide make for smaller waves. For instance, a 250 km 3 block running westward 60 km at 50 m/s generates tsunami with about 1/4 to 3/8 the amplitude of those presented above.

In the past million years, dozens of lateral collapse land- slides of a size comparable to the one considered here have been shed from volcanic islands in the Atlantic. If our models are correct, tsunami from these incidents should have washed several times over most coasts that have good exposure to the sea. A test of these predictions lies in whether tsunami depos- its associated with specific collapses can be identified, dated, and widely correlated. Ironically, because of the more favorable preservation conditions underwater, evidence of collapse tsunami may be more widespread on the continental shelf than on land. Still, the low-lying, tectonically stable, non-glaciated margins of west Africa, the southeast United States and north-east Brazil, together with the Bahamas Carbonate platform, should be particularly suitable sites for geologists to search for footprints of these occasional visitors.”

     To me it looks like Americans had better stock up on boats, rain gear and all other doomsday survival tools, because Noah is back in town!
