To The Australian
Hopefully the current series of ‘planned discussions’ by small indigenous groups on means to constitutional recognition will eventually be seen as a classic case of an exercise in futility (‘Conference calls for treaty talks’, 13/3). Convener Norma Ingram asks: ‘Is there a danger that we cede our sovereignty?’ What sovereignty? The sovereign of the whole of Australia is the Queen.

There were about 100 people at this latest conference. That is not a case of the tail trying to wag the dog, but of a hair on the dog’s tail trying to do so. Australians will never yield the unity of their nation.
