A new class elite compares Captain Cook to Covid-19. Wow, that is the standard line pushed at out tax payers funded universities, isn’t it?

“The Andrews government is standing by deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese van Diemen, amid calls for her resignation after she likened Captain Cook to COVID-19. Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said Dr van Diemen was doing an “outstanding job” protecting Victorians from the coronavirus pandemic. “Criticism from angry MPs is irrelevant to the fight against this virus,” Ms Mikakos tweeted.

Dr van Diemen marked the 250th anniversary on Wednesday of British explorer Captain James Cook's arrival in Australia by comparing its impact with that of coronavirus in a tweet. "Sudden arrival of an invader from another land, decimating populations, creating terror," Dr van Diemen tweeted. "Forces the population to make enormous sacrifices & completely change how they live in order to survive. COVID-19 or Cook 1770."

Opposition health spokeswoman Georgie Crozier said Dr van Diemen’s comments were “highly inappropriate” at a time when Victoria remains in a state of emergency. “She should resign,” Ms Crozier said. “These are extraordinary comments from the Deputy Chief Health Officer who has extraordinary powers and is the signatory of Victoria’s lockdown laws, the strictest in the country. “The Deputy Chief Health Officer has a role in providing advice to the Premier and state ministers on the COVID-19 pandemic, not an inaccurate history lesson to Victorians. “How can Victorians have confidence in the advice being provided to them when our most senior bureaucrats are making such ideological public commentary that has nothing to do with the crisis that we are all facing? “This is divisive commentary at a time when we are being told to work together. “(Premier) Daniel Andrews needs to explain to Victorians why someone clearly not focused on the task at hand should remain in this role. Paediatrician and federal MP for the inner southeastern Melbourne seat of Higgins Katie Allen said the comments were “unhelpful”. “Sensational comments like this are unhelpful at a time when our public health experts should be focused on an appropriate response to covid - not using a health crisis to make a political statement #COVID19,” Dr Allen tweeted.

COVID19 or Cook 1770? Liberal frontbencher Tim Smith earlier tweeted: "What's with the culture wars crap from a state health bureaucrat at a time like this?" "Comparing the extraordinary first voyage of Captain Cook where he charted the east coast of Australia for the first time to a deadly virus is disgraceful. You've lost the plot," Mr Smith tweeted.”
Nothing like a good pandemic to bring out the politically correct fanaticism among our elite. It is good to see her hammered by critics. That would not have occurred to the same degree a few years ago. Keep up the good work, Australia!
