The paper is real. Published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, authored by Clark, Fjeldmark, Lu, Baumeister, Ceci, and others, a survey of 470 U.S. psychology professors was conducted. And the headline number is devastating: 66.4% of male professors said scientists should prioritise truth when truth and social equity come into conflict. Only 43.0% of women agreed. A 23-point spread on the most fundamental question science can ask itself: what are we doing here?

The minority of men who said social equity should trump truth? 1.3%. For women it was 4.8%. Still small in absolute terms, but nearly four times the rate. And the mushy middle: "it's complicated," claimed 32.4% of men versus 52.1% of women. More than half of female psychology professors cannot bring themselves to say, without hedging, that truth should win when it conflicts with making people feel affirmed. That is the death certificate. Not the diagnosis. The death certificate.

We're not talking about some fringe department at a third-tier state school. We're talking about the entire academic enterprise. Women now earn 58% of all bachelor's degrees, 60% of all master's degrees, and 54% of all doctorates. Female faculty make up the majority across disciplines. The presidents of Harvard, MIT, Columbia, and nearly half the top twenty universities are women; much the same for Australia too. The pipeline is not diversifying, it's replacing men.

And as women flood into the academy, they bring with them woke: this is not stereotype, this is survey data, a fundamentally different relationship to truth. One in which social harmony, emotional safety, and equity outcomes are not competing values to be balanced against truth-seeking. They are prior values. Truth is instrumental. Truth serves the project of making people feel safe and validated. When it doesn't, truth is the problem.

This is not a moral failing. It's a cognitive orientation. Women, on average, are more agreeable, more conflict-averse, more attuned to social dynamics, more invested in maintaining group cohesion. These are real traits with real evolutionary roots. In a village of 150 people where you have to raise children together, share resources, and manage relationships across a lifetime, prioritising harmony over uncomfortable facts is adaptive. It works.

But a research university is not a village. A physics department is not a cooperative childcare arrangement. The Large Hadron Collider does not care about your feelings. A null result does not care whether publishing it will hurt someone's career or make a marginalised group feel excluded. The universe is not agreeable. And a scientific enterprise run by people who instinctively prioritise social outcomes over empirical ones is an enterprise that will, over time, stop doing science and start doing something else entirely.

The study didn't just measure abstract values. It measured behavior. And the behavioral findings are even more alarming than the attitudinal ones. Female professors were significantly more likely to want to discourage research into taboo conclusions. Across seven of ten controversial topics, women wanted to shut down inquiry more than men did. Topics where the truth might be uncomfortable. Topics where the findings might conflict with progressive social commitments. Topics like evolved psychological sex differences, or political bias in social science, or the possibility that academia discriminates against conservatives.

This is not about competence. Women are perfectly capable of doing rigorous work within an established paradigm. The problem is that science advances precisely by challenging paradigms, and paradigms are protected by social consensus. If you're temperamentally inclined to protect social consensus, you will protect paradigms. You will discourage the research that threatens them. You will peer-review into oblivion papers that reach the wrong conclusions. You will hire and promote people who share your commitments. You will build an entire institutional machinery that looks like science: journals, conferences, peer review, grants, but functions as an enforcement arm for ideological orthodoxy.

The replication crisis was not an accident. It was not a few bad apples. It was the predictable outcome of a field that stopped prioritising truth and started prioritising the production of aesthetically pleasing, socially desirable findings. And who was driving that shift? The study gives us the answer in hard numbers. Women academics.

Psychology is the canary because psychology sits at the intersection of empirical science and social values. The taboo topics are right there: race and IQ, sex differences, gender identity, political bias. You can't do psychology without bumping into them. So, psychology was the first discipline to break.

But the same demographic transformation is happening across STEM. Biology is now majority female at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Chemistry is approaching parity. Even physics and engineering, the last redoubts, are under intense institutional pressure to feminise, not through organic interest, but through targeted recruitment, lowered standards, and DEI mandates that treat the sex disparity as a problem to be solved rather than a reflection of genuine differences in interest and aptitude distributions.

When those women arrive, they bring their cognitive orientations with them. And the institutional culture shifts. What counts as a "good" research question changes. What counts as an acceptable methodology changes. What counts as a legitimate finding changes. The entire epistemic framework bends toward social utility.

We've already seen what this looks like in practice. AI ethics has been captured almost entirely by people whose primary concern is not whether the model works but whether the model's outputs might hurt someone's feelings. Medical research increasingly prioritises "health equity" over biological reality, spending billions studying how racism causes disease rather than how pathogens cause disease. Climate science has become so thoroughly politicised that questioning any aspect of the consensus narrative, even on narrow technical grounds, is treated as heresy.

These are not separate phenomena. They are the same phenomenon, the feminisation of knowledge production, manifesting across different domains. And the Clark et al. study gives us the mechanism: when women run the show, truth becomes optional.

The Clancy trial featured duelling psychiatric experts, each with impeccable credentials, each testifying to diametrically opposed conclusions about the same woman's mental state. How does that happen? How does a field that calls itself a science produce experts who can testify with equal confidence to opposite truths?

Because psychology stopped being a science. It became a therapeutic enterprise, and then an advocacy enterprise, and now a quasi-religious enterprise in which the purpose of expertise is not to discover truth but to provide authoritative cover for preferred social outcomes. The defence wanted Clancy to be a victim of a broken system. So, they found experts who would testify that she was. The prosecution wanted her to be a murderer. So, they found experts who would testify that she knew what she was doing. Both sides had PhDs. Both sides had publications. Both sides spoke the language of diagnosis and prognosis and clinical judgment. And the jury, faced with this spectacle, did what any biased person would do: they couldn't agree on what was real; of course the majority of women going for not guilty.

This is the future of every expert domain if the trend continues. Not just psychology. Medicine. Epidemiology. Economics. Physics. Every field where the truth might be politically inconvenient will develop parallel expert classes, each producing research that supports their side, each citing their own journals, each dismissing the other as ideologically compromised. And the public, having watched this happen, will conclude, correctly, that expertise is just power wearing a lab coat.

Here's how it plays out, step by step:

Stage One: The influx. Women enter a field in large numbers, initially through meritocratic competition, later through affirmative pressure. The field's demographics shift from male-dominated to mixed to female-dominated.

Stage Two: The culture shift. The field's norms change. Collaboration replaces competition. Process replaces results. Emotional safety becomes a legitimate consideration in research design and hiring. Criticism is reframed as aggression. Disagreement is reframed as harassment.

Stage Three: The epistemic capture. Certain conclusions become unsayable. Not because they're false, because they're harmful. Researchers who pursue them are defunded, depublished, and eventually deplatformed. The ones who remain learn to self-censor. The Clark study found that professors more confident in taboo conclusions reported more self-censorship, not less. The people who actually know the truth are the ones most afraid to speak it.

Stage Four: The hollowing out. The field still looks like science from the outside. Journals still publish. Conferences still convene. Grants still flow. But the actual knowledge being produced is increasingly detached from reality. Theories become unfalsifiable. Predictions fail. Replications fail. But no one notices, because no one is allowed to point it out without being accused of undermining the field's social mission.

Stage Five: The collapse. The field loses all credibility with the public and with adjacent disciplines. Its findings are ignored by policymakers. Its experts are mocked. Its funding dries up. And the real work of understanding the world migrates elsewhere, to independent researchers, to industry labs, to countries that haven't feminised their scientific establishments.

We are somewhere between Stage Three and Stage Four across most of the social sciences. Psychology is deepest into it. Sociology and anthropology are already dead, they're just still walking around like woke zombies. Education schools have been fully captured for decades. The hard sciences are earlier in the process, but the trajectory is the same.

When science dies, it doesn't leave a vacuum. It leaves a power struggle. And the thing that fills the space where empirical inquiry used to be is social work.

Social work is not a pejorative here. Social work is a real profession with real value. But social work is not science. Social work starts with the premise that the client needs help, that the system is broken, that the goal is to reduce suffering and promote well-being. Those are fine premises for a helping profession. They are catastrophic premises for an epistemology.

When you run a physics department like a social work agency, you stop asking whether string theory is true and start asking whether string theory is inclusive. When you run a medical school like a social work agency, you stop asking whether a treatment works and start asking whether the treatment advances health equity. When you run a psychology department like a social work agency, you stop asking whether a diagnosis is valid and start asking whether the diagnosis makes the patient feel stigmatised.

The Clark study shows us that this is not a hypothetical. The majority of female psychology professors already cannot commit to prioritising truth over social equity. They are already social workers in lab coats. And they are training the next generation in their image.

Science is the only reliable method humans have ever developed for separating what is true from what we wish were true. It is the engine of every technological advance, every medical breakthrough, every increase in human flourishing since the Enlightenment. It works precisely because it is inhumane, because it does not care about your feelings, your identity, your trauma, your sacred values. It cares about one thing: does the model predict the data?

A civilisation that loses its ability to distinguish truth from comfort is a civilisation that cannot solve its problems. It cannot build bridges that stay up. It cannot develop drugs that work. It cannot understand its own economy, its own climate, its own biology. It drifts, making decisions based on what feels good rather than what is true, until reality asserts itself in the rudest possible way; a famine, a plague, a military defeat, a blackout.

The feminisation of science is not just a women problem. It's a civilisation problem. The women in the academy are doing exactly what their cognitive orientations incline them to do. The fault lies with a culture that decided, somewhere in the 1970s, that all cognitive orientations are equally suited to all tasks, that any disparity in representation is evidence of injustice, and that the solution to that injustice is to transform every institution until the demographics match the population.

The result is not equality. The result is the destruction of the institutions themselves. You can have a scientific establishment that prioritises truth, or you can have one that looks like America and Australia. You cannot have both. The Clark study proves it. The replication crisis proves it. The Clancy trial, with its duelling experts and its deadlocked jury and its pink-clad supporters outside the courthouse, proves it.

The question is whether anyone is willing to say so, and do something about it, before the bridges start falling down.
