In a sharp new Substack essay, Celina101 lays out a compelling and disturbing diagnosis: Bioleninism is not just a passing cultural fad, it is the operating system now running much of the Western world. The piece pulls together threads from Spandrell's original 2017 concept and shows how this system of engineered loyalty through biological and social grievance has become the dominant power maintenance strategy of our time.
What Bioleninism Actually Is
Classical Leninism recruited the dispossessed and turned them into shock troops of the revolution. Bioleninism does something similar, but it operates in wealthy, high-trust, post-industrial societies. Instead of class warfare, it weaponises human biodiversity, real, measurable group differences in cognitive ability, personality, impulse control, fertility, and life outcomes.
The core logic is brutally pragmatic:
Ruling managerial elites (government bureaucracies, corporations, academia, media) cannot reliably count on naturally high-achieving, independent-minded people, often from the historic majority population, because those people can succeed without the regime's favour. They might even challenge it.
So, the regime instead elevates individuals and groups who underperform in open, merit-based competition. In exchange for preferential treatment, through DEI hiring, affirmative action, legal protections, cultural celebration, and suppressed criticism, these groups become the regime's most reliable defenders. Their elevated status depends entirely on the continuation of the system. If merit, tradition, or biological reality returned, their positions would collapse.
This creates a loyal coalition of the fringes: people with every incentive to punish dissent and enforce increasingly absurd ideological claims.
How it Spreads Through Institutions
We see it everywhere:
Corporate HR and DEI: Companies fill key roles based on identity checkboxes rather than competence. "Diversity is our strength" becomes a loyalty test. Failure is blamed on "systemic bias," justifying even more intervention.
Academia: Entire fields shift from discovery to activism. Questioning group outcome gaps is career suicide. Grievance studies thrive while rigorous disciplines struggle for funding.
Government Policy: Laws and welfare systems actively discourage stable family formation among competent populations while expanding client classes dependent on the state.
Media and Culture: Narratives relentlessly celebrate the marginal and pathologise the normal. Biological sex becomes "assigned at birth." All disparities are framed as oppression.
The more biologically implausible the claim (instant sex changes for children with no downsides, infinite malleability of human nature, borders as inherently evil), the stronger the loyalty signal it sends. Believing the unbelievable proves your commitment.
The Fatal Flaws and Follies
Bioleninism is elegant as a power strategy, but it is disastrous as governance. Its weaknesses are becoming impossible to ignore:
1. Competence Collapse. Modern civilisation runs on complex, high-IQ, high-conscientiousness systems, nuclear plants, air traffic control, semiconductor manufacturing, advanced medicine. When you systematically select against these traits in the name of equity, things start breaking. We're already seeing it in falling standardised test scores, infrastructure failures, rising medical errors, and declining innovation in captured institutions.
2. Unstable Coalition. The "fringes" are not a natural alliance. Gay activists clash with certain religious minorities, who we cannot name. Feminist goals conflict with trans ideology on sports and prisons. Different ethnic groups have incompatible average outcomes and interests; can't name them either. "Intersectionality," whatever the Left mean by this (roughly things that can oppress, interact and compound) is a temporary patch on deep contradictions. A system built on resentment eventually eats its own.
3. Demographic Suicide. Policies that punish family formation among higher-ability populations, while subsidising lower-ability dependency create terrible selection pressures. The West's fertility collapse is not random, it is accelerated by bioleninist incentives. You cannot run a high-trust, high-performance society with a shrinking cognitive elite and an expanding underclass.
4. Reality Denial as Operating Principle. The greatest folly is the philosophical dishonesty at its heart. Bioleninism must deny the very biological differences it exploits. Twin studies, adoption research, genomics, and global performance patterns all point to substantial heritability and group differences. Pretending otherwise requires ever-more authoritarian control over speech, education, and thought.
5. Backlash Inevitability. No system can suppress competence and common sense forever. Public trust in institutions has cratered. Parallel economies, homeschooling surges, populist political revolts, and elite defection are all signs that the ratchet is reaching its limit.
Bioleninism thrives in prosperous, homogeneous, high-trust societies that can afford to play status games. Those conditions are fading. As the costs mount, in safety, prosperity, social cohesion, and national competitiveness, the West faces an existential choice.
Nations that quietly prioritise merit, family stability, and realistic selection (much of East Asia) are pulling ahead. Those that double down on Bioleninism risk managed decline or worse.
The tragedy is that none of this requires malice or conspiracy, although there is plenty of that. It emerges naturally from the incentives of managerial elites who want to stay in power. But incentives can be changed.
Recognising bioleninism for what it is, a deeply flawed, anti-human, anti-civilisational strategy, is the first step toward dismantling it. Not through cruelty or supremacy, but through a return to truth: human beings are not interchangeable, excellence matters, and societies that align policy with reality outcompete those that don't.
The West does not have to die. But it will if it continues letting bioleninism eat it alive from the inside, like a social cancer.
