A student group by the name of RailRoad held the event titled "Prison Abolition 101" on Nov. 8. The group seeks to ensure that the American prison system is "destroyed" and believes that incarceration is inherently unjust and unproductive. RailRoad member Grace Austin stated during the event that “the end goal is to not have prisons as any form of incarceration," and that "punishment at any stage doesn’t guarantee any kind of growth," according to a report by The Brown Daily Herald. The student group's stated mission is to create a "world where the Prison Industrial Complex in all of its forms has been destroyed and built in its place are systems of accountability that allow for healing and growth." "Prisons were founded in the ideas of punishing the poor, punishing people of color,” presenter Aida Sherif said, adding “I don’t see it as an institution that can ever fully break away from those foundations.” “Our society is constructed in a way that would have us believe prisons are absolutely necessary,” Sherif said. “People perceive it as crazy, unreasonable, dangerous, too radical. Abolition is not anarchy.” The event reportedly did not present concrete plans or a timeline to achieve this "abolition," but rather emphasized that the complete dismantling of the U.S. prison system was a realistic long-term goal. In October, Railroad presented a proposal calling upon the university to cease the consideration of criminal aspects such as conviction history in its hiring processes, and even to implement a quota of "formerly incarcerated community members."

     Australia is a land of deserts, droughts, floods, bushfires, flammable forests and fire-prone grasslands – these conditions have developed since the start of the Holocene Warm Era about twelve thousand years ago. All previous Australian bushies, both black and white, have recognised the key principle of fire management in Australia – you can have many small managed “cool” fires in early spring or a few unplanned disastrous “hot” fires consuming a heavy fuel load in hot dry winds in late spring. Even more stupid are those who think politicians can control or abolish droughts and bushfires by banning the use of coal and oil in a futile attempt to lower global temperature. To The Australian        Rachel Perkins states, in the latest effort to promote an unjust privileging of a small minority of Australians over others ("At the heart of the voice is just our desire for honesty", 15/11) that Uluru (or Ayers Rock) is "the symbolic and spiritual heart of our nation." Whose nation? And on what grounds does she make this claim? How can that stone monolith be the centre of a political order, founded originally by Britain, which is rightly described as a commonwealth? Yes, a wealth shared by all Australians, the great majority of whom have no Aboriginal ancestry. Ms Perkins also claims that she feels "uniquely Australian", but in reality there is no such uniqueness for her or any other Australian. What she means is that she has her own unique ethnic ancestry. Each other Australian can claim the same for himself or herself, but it does not pertain at all to their constitutional status as Australians. There is something fundamentally contradictory in her claims: she wants to divide while at the same time claiming to unite.

To The Australian         Greg Sheridan tells us ("Boris and Donald as masters of their universe", 16-17/11) that "the exit deal Johnson negotiated with the EU is far from ideal but it is a thousand times better than Theresa May's surrender deal." Is it, however, a guaranteed pathway to a genuine (that is, complete) withdrawal from the EU that truly honours the clear decision of the 2016 referendum? Sheridan does not say, but his language seems inflated, even self-contradictory, which is not reassuring. Two factors, however, suggest he is right: the fact that the "hard right"  or "extreme Eurosceptic" Conservative MPs have accepted the deal and the willingness of Nigel Farage to facilitate a Conservative victory at the expense of his Brexit Party's numbers.

To The Australian          No, you are wrong in your editorial ("Big dangers in Farage's antics", 6/11). It is not Nigel Farage that threatens to derail Brexit but Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party. Farage stands unequivocally for a clear and clean break with the EU. Johnson's refusal to enter an alliance with the Brexit Party (obviously necessary to give the best possible chance of defeating the Remain camp) is merely the latest betrayal of the British people by the Tories. In the past, under Ted Heath, the Conservatives misled voters about what entry into the 'European Common Market' would mean. David Cameron, an Establishment man, called the 2016 referendum confident, as he has admitted, that Remain would win. Theresa May produced a proposed "deal" with the EU that amounted to surrender (a pseudo-Brexit). Boris Johnson has largely taken that over. If the British people really want Brexit, they must take the bull by the horns and vote Farage and his party into power.

To The Australian        Luke Slattery is unfair to conservatives ("To Menzies, ordinary Australians were anything but", 8/11) in referring to an alleged "tendency on the right to vaunt pecuniary values over all others." This entirely ignores the idealism that is essential to right wing political theory in many contexts. Whether one looks at centre right men like T. S. Eliot or Russell Kirk, or hard right spokesmen such as John Tyndall or Kevin McDonald, one sees a clear distaste for those who pursue "the golden calf" of personal financial profit. It is a Confucian respect for the ways of the elders that drives conservatism, a love of the tried and the true. Where the hard right errs, we may feel, is in proposing solutions to political questions that have really been superannuated by history. Nothing can stop the mixing of peoples that is now under way.

To The Age        Waleed Aly pulls a long bow ("New walls, old prejudices", 8/11) in associating support for Brexit with "believing in the eternal supremacy of the British Empire". Everyone knows that the days of imperial grandeur are long gone, except in profitable period films like "Vanity Fair". What is at issue is the future of a British way of life distinguished by the degree of personal freedom given to subjects of the realm and the legal tradition underpinning that. The Brexit Party (more so than the Conservatives) is the freedom party; and walls, essentially, are beneficial to culture and civilisation, as well as to liberty.

     This article, referenced below, is behind a paywall, as they increasingly are, but I popped down to the local library and read the hard copy: Bo Seo, “Mass Surveillance Just an Act Away.” Australian Financial Review, October 31, 2019, p. 15. The issue is the government’s quest to get enhanced powers to use facial recognition technology. This was done for various sensible activities such as road safety, but behind this was the dark side, the lack of a need for warrants, ministerial discretion and automated decision-making, all of which got canned recently by a bipartisan parliamentary committee. The bills will resurface. They will, if passed, enable the Department of Home Affairs to maintain a centralised data bank of facial images from government sources and identity markers and information. This data can then be used by government departments to commit evil acts … no kidding … it will be used for a wide range of surveillance purposes. But, hey, the elites say, if you have not broken the law, what is there to be afraid of? That is fine if one is willing to throw away the common law protections that developed over the centuries, which the modern Western technocratic state, soon to be totalitarian, is only too willing to do.
