Can Our Computer Mad World Bring Us Down? By Brian Simpson

This topic, of whether our computer dominated world will bring us down was discussed recently at Survivopedia.com, an interesting site with a variety of survivalist and technological articles, well worth having a look. The idea of computers getting out of control was a stable of sci fi literature and films, with the Terminator series probably being the most famous. The message in those movies was that technology, through human hubris would get out of control, and once it became self-aware, all bets are of what it will do, most likely not being biologically based it will see biological organisms tasking up too much room, and thus seek to eliminate them. That day is not here yet, but recently an AI experiments by Facebook, led, supposedly to the computers developing heir own language, which the humans did not understand, so the experiment was shut down.

In the shorter term what we face are humans using IT and robots as weapons of war and oppression. There is cyber-warfare, waged by china against the West, something that has been going on since the first hacking centred were set up by the communist regime in the 1990s. This has led to a breach such as hacking into a US nuclear power plant, and tasking it over for a few hours before the breach was halted. During that time a meltdown could have easily occurred. As well, cyberattacks upon the power grid could also case enormous damage. The US grid is thought to receive a number of attacks each day.

Russia has hacked into 18,000 different US computer sites, targeting the network monitoring software made by SolarWinds, giving the Russians a back door into many of the top US government sites. Thus, it was not even necessary to hack into individual systems, they simply went through the backdoor. Thus the reap potential exists for the entire technological infrastructure of modern society to be brought down. Certainly an EMP attack, using high altitude nuclear weapon detonation would do this. It is difficult to see how this could be prevented, but certainly there would be a return fire that would produce the same results in the attacking country, bring the lights out, everywhere.

It is trite to say that too much faith has been put upon computerisation; the human monkey being what it is, there would never be a cold sober rational appraisal, but, as soon as power and money are sensed, human elites go for it, even though it is likely to take them down in the end.
